Following an interpretive approach to the study of culture, this paper examines Tahitian dance as a commodity for consumption in the Hawai‘ian tourism industry. I argue that the tourism industry sustains itself by producing a primitive Otherness through the deliberate display of bodies, and tourist dance performances provide a site for that display and visual representation.
