  • Raw material utilisation and technological trends in Gadeb and Middle Awash during the Early to Middle Pleistocene

Open Access•Haftom B Taezaz, Sarah Wurz et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2026

The Acheulean archaeological record of Ethiopia has played a key role in understanding the evolution of lithic technology throughout the African Earlier Stone Age. Sites situated in the Great Rift Valley and Highland areas of Ethiopia range in age from the Early to the Middle Pleistocene and provide opportunities to investigate how tool manufacturing was impacted by different ecological settings through time. Despite the importance of Ethiopian A…

  • New Rock Art Sites in Tigrai, Northern Ethiopia, and Their Relevance to the Understanding of the Rock Art and Dating of Domesticates Elsewhere in Ethiopia

Agazi Negash, Gebretsadkan Mulubrhan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2023•Referências: 12

Two new rock art sites in Irob district of eastern Tigrai, northern Ethiopia, are presented. One of the sites, Ra Bolo, contains images of domestic cattle and human figures while the other, Adhay Bolo, appears to contain only images of caprines, the only example of such a scene not just in the region but in all of Ethiopia. The sites fit well with the already established northern Ethiopian assemblage of paintings and engravings. The paintings bel…

  • Geological origin of the archaeological obsidian artifacts from the Holocene sequences of Mochena Borago and Yabello, southern Ethiopia

    Open Access•Agazi Negash•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2022•Referências: 40

Obsidian archaeological artifacts from the Holocene occupation sequences at the contemporary sites of Mochena Borago and Yabello, southern Ethiopia, have been characterized using electron microprobe analysis. Results show the artifacts of each site were partially procured from two separate but known sources, Bantu and Chebe. The inhabitants of both sites also seem to have used obsidian from another, as yet unknown, source. This is interesting as …

  • An ethnographic experiment of endscraper curation rate among hadiya hideworkers, ethiopia

    Yonatan Sahle, Agazi Negash•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2016•Citada por: 3•Referências: 42

The extent of reduction in retouched stones serves as a proxy for curation. In the archaeological record, reduction intensity must be inferred from discarded remnants of tools. The contemporary use of scraper blades by hideworkers in southern Ethiopia provides archaeologists rare opportunities where original tool dimensions can be directly measured and other variables investigated. This study closely examines previously suggested factors for inte…

  • Variability in Ethnographic Hidescraper Use among the Hadiya of Ethiopia

  • A reassessment of the Middle and Later Stone Age lithic assemblages from Aladi Springs, Southern Afar Rift, Ethiopia

Tegenu Gossa, Yonatan Sahle et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2012•Citada por: 4•Referências: 13

The site of Aladi Springs was discovered and excavated in the 1970s. However, the assemblages from this site did not subsequently receive full investigation. Here, we present results of the first exhaustive analysis of the lithic collections from both the Middle and the Later Stone Age (MSA/LSA) occupation horizons at this site. Detailed analysis of metric and non-metric attributes reveals a marked variability in production techniques and overall…

  • Varieties and Sources of Artefactual Obsidian in the Middle Stone Age of the Middle Awash, Ethiopia

    Open Access•Agazi Negash, F Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2011•Citada por: 32•Referências: 16

Recent investigation of the geochemical provenance of obsidian artefacts from spatially and temporally variable archaeological sites in Ethiopia has shown the diversity of geological sources and concomitant differences in the transport of raw material to archaeological sites, thus allowing reconstruction of the utilization of raw material by early hominids as well as recent humans. We recognize 30 compositionally different obsidians that were use…

  • Possible isotopic fractionation of argon in source obsidians and archeological artifacts from Kulkuletti, Ethiopia

  • Geochemical Provenance of Obsidian Artefacts From the Msa Site of Porc Epic, Ethiopia

    Open Access•Agazi Negash, M S Shackley•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2006•Citada por: 59•Referências: 39

Obsidian geochemical analysis has become an indispensable tool in archaeological research and has wide applications. However, in spite of the abundance of geological and archaeological obsidian, there has been virtually no such investigation in Ethiopia. Recent instrumental characterization of 31 obsidian artefacts from the Middle Stone Age site of Porc Epic and numerous obsidian geological sources show that artefacts were being transported from …
