  • Isotopic and chemical evidence for long-distance trade of copper and tin into east-central Botswana, c. cal. AD 800–1650

Open Access•Jay Stephens, Carla Klehm et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2026

The sites of Bosutswe, Khubu la Dintša and Lose in east-central Botswana provide evidence of the presence of an élite (marked by the use of Lose pottery) among commoners (marked by other pottery traditions). Prior work by Denbow and Miller (2007) noted evidence of bronze at Bosutswe. This paper extends their work by inferring the provenance of copper and tin at these three sites, using chemistry, lead isotopes and tin isotopes. Copper came from a…

  • Connecting survey data with targeted test excavations to understand lithic artefacts in the landscape of the southern Kalahari, Botswana

Open Access•Rowena Winterhalder, Chris Green et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2026•Referências: 64

Southern African Middle Stone Age research has largely focused on the region’s coastal caves and rock-shelters, while its semi-arid interior remains under-investigated due to the assumption of limited stratified deposits. Nevertheless, as recent studies prove, this region also possesses potential for contributing to Palaeolithic archaeology. This study presents surveys and excavations in southern Botswana that documented Pleistocene quartzite lit…

  • Dune, outcrop, and pan sediments from the southern Kalahari Basin

Open Access•Inèz Faul, Taylor Grandfield et al.•ARTICLE•Southern African Field Archaeology•2025

Research from the southern Kalahari Basin (previously considered to be of limited Pleistocene archaeological significance) has provided evidence of human occupation. Surveys and excavations conducted in the Kgalagadi District near Tsabong in south-western Botswana have revealed a plethora of archaeological evidence. The region includes geomorphological features, including dunes, low quartzite hills, and pans. Duricrust formations are visible insi…

  • Archaeological survey near Tsabong, Kgalagadi District, southwestern Botswana

Open Access•Michaela Ecker, Chris Green et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 30

The importance of the arid interior of southern Africa for human evolution has come into focus in recent years. However, the current distribution of archaeological sites is limited to the southern margin of the Kalahari sediments in South Africa and to the northern part of Botswana. Surface scatters of archaeological artefacts in other parts of the Kalahari have not been studied systematically despite their potential to test human adaptation to m…
