Identification with and Social Comparison to Teen Mothers on Teen Mom Over Time
This study replicates from a cross-sectional study about how young Latina teen viewers identify with and socially compare to teen mothers on MTV’s Teen Mom over time. Identification and social comparison effects on attitudes toward teen pregnancy were assessed among the same group of Latina teen viewers at two different time points approximately one year apart. Cultural Influences on Hispanic Mother–Daughter Communication About Sex
INTRODUCTION: Hispanic adolescents are at high risk of engaging in sexual risk-taking behaviors. Parent-child communication protects against such behaviors. Among Hispanic families, it is critical to explore how cultural characteristics influence mothers-daughter communication about sex. The Measurement of Female Early Adolescent Sexual Desire
We used the developmental systems model to deduce a definition of female early adolescent sexual desire. We evaluated a measure of this phenomenon with a secondary analysis of data from a randomized group sexual health intervention trial involving low-income, English-speaking, seventh grade Latinas enrolled in a Miami-Dade County public school ( n = 542). As part of this study, girls completed a four-item early adolescent sexual desire (EASD) mea…
Latina Teens’ Identification with and Social Comparison to Mothers on Teen Mom
A survey was conducted with low income Latina teens ( M = 13.31 years of age) to examine the ways in which exposure, identification with, and social comparison to teen mothers featured on the MTV program Teen Mom influenced attitudes toward teen pregnancy. Analyses revealed that those who identified with and looked up to the teen mothers on Teen Mom were less likely to think getting pregnant would be embarrassing, a terrible event, or prevent the…
Resisting Pressure From Peers to Engage in Sexual Behavior
A content analysis of early adolescent ( M =12.02 years) Latino girls' (n=44) responses to open-ended questions imbedded in an electronic survey was conducted to explore strategies girls may use to resist peer pressure with respect to sexual behavior. Analysis yielded 341 codable response units, 74% of which were consistent with the REAL typology (i.e., refuse, explain, avoid, and leave) previously identified in adolescent substance use research.…

Predicting Psychological Distress Among Former Soviet Immigrants
This study investigated whether age, gender, marital status, education, employ ment, length of time in the U.S. and immigration demands (novelty, occupation, language, discrimination, loss, and not feeling at home) were predictors of psychological distress in a sample of 1,647 former Soviet immigrants. Multiple regression analysis indicated that the combined model of demographic and demand of immigration variables was significant. Results indicat…

Effects of Interviewer Age on Reporting of Sexual and Reproductive Behavior of Hispanic and African American Youth
The purpose of this article is to evaluate the effects of interviewer age on the reporting of personal behaviors including sexual experience, abortion, live births, and condom use. Data were drawn from a household probability sample of 1,435 urban, low-income, African American and Hispanic youths 15 to 24 years of age conducted in 1991. The results indicate that interviewer age does play a role in the reporting of sensitive behaviors, although th…

Psychometrics of a Brief Acculturation Scale for Hispanics in a Probability Sample of Urban Hispanic Adolescents and Young Adults
This article presents data in support of the reliability and validity of afour-item measure of acculturationfor Hispanics. The study has three strengths. First, this brief measure is evaluated with a probability sample of Hispanic adolescents and young adults (ages 15-24 years) living in urban, low-income households. Second, the sample contains both second-and third-generation Puerto Rican and Mexican American adolescents and young adults. Third,…
Urban Hispanic adolescents and young adults
As Hispanic persons in the U.S. are exposed to U.S. culture, changes may occur in values, attitudes, and behavior. This process of change has been called acculturation. Data were drawn from a household probability sample of 711 low income, urban youth. The relatio…

Also of interest was the utility of the construct accessibility model (CAM) in explaining condom use behavior. Results suggest several participants believed condoms protect against AIDS and several b…
Methodological considerations for survey research on sexual behavior
The objectives of this paper are to review previous research on methods for data collection and to report experience in collecting data, on the sexual behavior of urban low‐income, African American and Hispanic youth. The results of this review indicate that data on sexual behavior in these populations can be collected in face‐to‐face interviews, and clinical language can be used to ask questions about intercourse. However, anal intercourse may b…
