Regional variations of racial disparities in advance care planning of older adults
Given the lack of research on geographic variations in advance care planning (ACP) engagement, this study examined whether there were 1) regional variations in engagement in ACP and 2) racial and ethnic differences in ACP by regions of the United States. The sample included 2,015 Medicare beneficiaries in the U.S. from the 2012 National Health and Aging Trends Study that asked respondents about ACP engagement (i.e., discussed end-of-life treatmen…
Geographic Disparities in the Relation between English Proficiency and Health Insurance Status among Older Latino and Asian Immigrants
Measurement Equivalence of the Subjective Well-Being Scale Among Racially/Ethnically Diverse Older Adults
Findings suggest that the comparison of latent means (especially for positive and negative affect and self-realization) across racial/ethnic groups is highly questionable. The SWBS should be used with extreme caution when it is applied to diverse racial/ethnic elderly groups for comparison purposes. Implications are discussed in cultural and methodological contexts
Geographic Region Matters in the Relation Between Perceived Racial Discrimination and Psychiatric Disorders Among Black Older Adults
Findings suggest that whereas, in general, perceived racial discrimination is a risk factor for poor mental health among older Blacks, this association may differ by geographic region. Additional research examining reasons for this variation is needed
Race/ethnicity and measurement equivalence of the Everyday Discrimination Scale.
The present study examines the effect of race/ethnicity on measurement equivalence of the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS; Williams, Yu, Jackson, & Anderson, 1997). Drawn from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (CPES; Alegría, Jackson, Kessler, & Takeuchi, 2008), adults aged 18 and older from four racial/ethnic groups were selected for analyses: 884 non-Hispanic Whites, 4,950 Blacks, 2,733 Hispanics/Latinos, and 2,089 Asians. M…
The Relation Between Diabetes Self-Efficacy and Psychological Distress Among Older Adults
Findings suggest that diabetes self-efficacy is associated with psychological distress among older diabetic patients and that race/ethnicity moderates the relationship between diabetes self-efficacy and psychological distress. Increasing diabetes self-efficacy will help racial/ethnic minority older patients with diabetes to improve psychological well-being at a greater level
The Relation Between Frequency of Binge Drinking and Psychological Distress Among Older Adult Drinkers
The results suggest that binge drinking frequently may be related to increased experiences of psychological distress among older drinkers. Research and clinical implications are discussed
Disparities in Health Status and Health Care Access and Use Among Older American Indians and Alaska Natives and Non-Hispanic Whites in California
These findings highlight the vulnerability and unmet health care needs of older AIANs. More research on the older AIAN population is clearly needed to document their health care needs in order to better inform efforts to reduce health disparities
Personal Views about Aging among Korean American Older Adults
Vulnerability of Older Latino and Asian Immigrants with Limited English Proficiency
OBJECTIVES: To explore the implications of limited English proficiency (LEP) for disparities in health status and healthcare service use of older Latino and Asian immigrants. DESIGN: Cross‐sectional analysis of existing secondary data. SETTING: The 2007 California Health Interview Survey. PARTICIPANTS: Latino and Asian immigrants aged 60 and older (n=1,745) were divided into three language proficiency groups: older adults who have LEP, are profic…
Limited English proficiency as a barrier to mental health service use
Self-rated mental health among Asian American adults
Race/ethnicity and the factor structure of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale
The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine racial/ethnic differences in the factor structure of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The total number of participants (N) in the assessed studies (k) varied according to whether the original study had used either Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA; N = 19,206, k = 13) or Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA; N = 65,554, k = 16). The factor structures of the CES-D were comp…
Perceived discrimination, sense of control, and depressive symptoms among Korean American older adults
This study explored a potential pathway by which perceived discrimination may affect levels of depressive symptoms in a sample of 472 Korean American older adults (M (age)= 69.9, SD = 7.04). Building upon previous studies demonstrating that perceived discrimination has negative impacts on mental health, we hypothesized that sense of control would mediate the associations between perceived discrimination and depressive symptoms. Our analyses showe…
Knowledge of Alzheimer’s Disease, Feelings of Shame, and Awareness of Services Among Korean American Elders
The study findings underscore the pivotal role of education and acculturation in predicting knowledge of AD, feelings of shame, and awareness of AD-related services
Acculturation and Depressive Symptoms Among Mexican American Elders New to the Caregiving Role
Better knowledge of the within-group differences among MA elderly caregivers, especially with respect to acculturation, may better inform interventions for this at-risk group
Changes in Perceived Health and Depressive Symptoms
Health Perception and Depressive Symptoms Among Older Korean Americans
A bidimensional model of acculturation for Korean American older adults
Acculturation and Its Effect on Depressive Symptom Structure in a Sample of Mexican American Elders
In this study, we compared the depressive symptoms reported by Mexican American elders who scored higher and lower on a linguistic acculturation scale. Prevalence, equality of covariance matrices, equality of error variances, and factor structures were examined for the 20 items included in the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) Scale. The sample consisted of 3,050 community-dwelling Mexican Americans from five states. Significant…
