Dyslipidemia, Obesity, and Ethnicity in Mexican Children
The aim of this study was to assess lipid disorders in children from five ethnic groups, both urban and indigenous, from northern and central Mexico. We measured the lipid profile to determine the ability of the body mass index (BMI) to discriminate an abnormally high lipid level using receiving operating characteristics (ROC). We analyzed the association and interaction of obesity and ethnicity with lipid disorders using generalized linear model…
Novel description of aldosterone synthase CYP11B2 -344 T>C gene polymorphism related to hypertension in Mexican Amerindians
This is a report on population genetics of -344 T>C polymorphism in Amerindians for the first time. The aim was to establish the frequency of this polymorphism present in the 5’ promoter region of the CYP11B2 gene in Amerindian (Mayans, Mixtecos, and Teenek) and Mestizo populations from Mexico. It has been associated with an aldosterone increase and hypertension. Analyses were carried out by 5’ exonuclease TaqMan genotyping assays in a group of 6…
Characterization of complete mitochondrial genomes of indigenous Mayans in Mexico
This indicates that no genetic exchange, at least matrilineally, has occurred among them
Genetic Differentiation in a Sample from Northern Mexico City Detected by HLA System Analysis
The major histocompatibility complex is directly involved in the immune response, and thus the genes coding for its proteins are useful markers for the study of genetic diversity, susceptibility to disease (autoimmunity and infections), transplant medicine, and pharmacogenetics, among others. The polymorphism of the system also allows researchers to use it as a proxy for population genetics analysis, such as genetic admixture and genetic structur…

Blood group O alleles in Native Americans
All major ABO blood alleles are found in most populations worldwide, whereas the majority of Native Americans are nearly exclusively in the O group. O allele molecular characterization could aid in elucidating the possible causes of group O predominance in Native American populations. In this work, we studied exon 6 and 7 sequence diversity in 180 O blood group individuals from four different Mesoamerican populations. Additionally, a comparative …
Molecular Demonstration of SLC4A1 Gene Deletion in Two Mexican Patients with Ovalocytosis
We describe the finding of two Mexican patients with a specific 27-bp deletion in the solute carrier family 4 gene (SLC4A1delta27) (also known as the band 3 gene found on chromosome 17q21-q22), characteristic of Southeast Asian ovalocytosis (SAO). The patients were asymptomatic, and the initial diagnosis was made by microscopic observation of the presence of typical stomatocytic ovalocytes. The gene deletion was confirmed by PCR and DNA sequencin…
Frequencies of HLA-A and HLA-B alleles in a Mexico City mestizo sample
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of HLA-A and HLA-B antigens in a sample of the Mexico City Mestizo population. Previous similar studies were done by other authors in nonrelated individuals, while the present investigation was performed in families (parents and offspring), and therefore, a more accurate estimate of gene and haplotype frequencies was obtained. The predominant antigens in descending order are A2, A24, and …
Gene frequencies and admixture estimates in the state of Puebla, Mexico
Three hundred ninety‐three individuals from the Universidad Autonoma de Puebla and its University Hospital were studied to determine the distribution of ABO, MN, Rh‐Hr, Duffy, and Diego blood groups; red cell hemoglobin and glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase variants; and serum haptoglobins, albumins, and factor B f types. With the results we estimated that the proportions of black, indian, and white genes are 10.7%, 56.3%, and 33.0%, respectively…
Gene frequencies and admixture estimates in a Mexico City population
Five hundred and ten students of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México were tested to determine the distribution of ABO, MN, Rr‐Hr blood groups, and serum haptoglobin, albumin, and Factor Bf types. Based on the results we found that the proportion of Indian and White genes are of 56.16 and 43.84%, respectively in the dihybrid model and 2.93, 56.22, and 40.85% for Blacks, Indians, and Whites in the trihybrid one. The present study reveals a …
