  • Alu elements within the human major histocompatibility class I region in the Comoros Islands

Open Access•Said Nassor Abeid, Majida Motrane et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2019

Background: Alu elements are attractive markers for population genetics, disease, forensics and paternity analyses, due to their particular characteristics. Five polymorphic Alu insertions within the MHC class I region have been little examined in human populations. Aim: The analysis of the genetic diversity of autochthonous Comorians from the three major islands of the archipelago by these polymorphic MHC Alus and to assess their relationships t…

  • Phylogeography of E1b1b1b-M81 Haplogroup and Analysis of Its Subclades in Morocco

Ahmed Reguig, Nourdin Harich et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2014

In this study we analyzed 295 unrelated Berber-speaking men from northern, central, and southern Morocco to characterize frequency of the E1b1b1b-M81 haplogroup and to refine the phylogeny of its subclades: E1b1b1b1-M107, E1b1b1b2-M183, and E1b1b1b2a-M165. For this purpose, we typed four biallelic polymorphisms: M81, M107, M183, and M165. A large majority of the Berber-speaking male lineages belonged to the Y-chromosomal E1b1b1b-M81 haplogroup. T…

  • Population history of the Red Sea—genetic exchanges between the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa signaled in the mitochondrial DNA HV1 haplogroup

Open Access•Eliška Musilová, Verónica Fernandes et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Citada por: 5•Referências: 37

Archaeological studies have revealed cultural connections between the two sides of the Red Sea dating to prehistory. The issue has still not been properly addressed, however, by archaeogenetics. We focus our attention here on the mitochondrial haplogroup HV1 that is present in both the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa. The internal variation of 38 complete mitochondrial DNA sequences (20 of them presented here for the first time) affiliated into…

  • Genetic differences among North African Berber and Arab-speaking populations revealed by Y-STR diversity

Open Access•María Gaibar, Esther Esteban et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2010

Y-chromosome STR polymorphisms are inherited in a haploid state which makes them a powerful tool for easy tracing of paternal lineage and for use in human population evolutionary studies. North-African Y chromosomal diversity has traditionally been studied in order to find genetic and geographic associations as well as to test how natural and cultural barriers have affected the degree of genetic flow not only within North Africa but also in a wid…

  • Population relationships in the Mediterranean revealed by autosomal genetic data ( Alu and Alu /STR compound systems)

    Open Access•Emili González‐Pérez, Esther Esteban et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2010•Citada por: 1•Referências: 44

The variation of 18 Alu polymorphisms and 3 linked STRs was determined in 1,831 individuals from 15 Mediterranean populations to analyze the relationships between human groups in this geographical region and provide a complementary perspective to information from studies based on uniparental markers. Patterns of population diversity revealed by the two kinds of markers examined were different from one another, likely in relation to their differen…

  • An unexpected wide population variation of the G1733A polymorphism of the androgen receptor gene

Open Access•Esther Esteban, Marc Via et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2005

The androgen receptor (AR) has been proposed as a candidate gene for several cancers (breast, prostate, uterine endometrium, colon, and esophagus). Ethnicity is considered an associated risk factor for some of these cancers. Several case-control genetic studies have been focused in samples of the main ethnic groups, but little is known about the distribution of risk polymorphisms in current populations with accurate ethnic and/or geographic origi…

  • Study of GM immunoglobulin allotypic system in Berbers and Arabs from Morocco

Open Access•Clotilde Coudray, Evelyne Guitard et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2005

The GM immunoglobulin allotype polymorphism was investigated in four Moroccan populations: three Berber groups from Khenifra (Middle Atlas), Amizmiz (High Atlas), and Bouhria (Beni Snassen) and one Arabic-speaking sample from the Doukkala area (Abda, Chaouia, Doukkali, and Tadla districts in south-central Morocco). In order to characterize the genetic relationships between the populations, our results were compared with those obtained for other N…

  • Genetic relationships among Berbers and South Spaniards based on CD4 microsatellite/Alu haplotypes

Open Access•Esther Esteban, Emili González‐Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2004

A geographical gradient of Sub-Saharan gene contribution has been detected in North Africa. The Middle Atlas Berbers showed an intermediate value in comparison with the high and low values found in Mauritanians and Moroccan Berbers, respectively. The analysis of the CD4 STR/Alu haplotype variation failed to indicate any particular relationship between South Spaniards and North Africans

  • Dermatoglyphic characterization of Berbers from Morocco

Open Access•Nourdin Harich, Esther Esteban et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2002

The picture obtained by principal components based on qualitative digital and palm data revealed that Berber males were within the variation range of North African groups while Berber females clustered with some Iberian samples. The population pattern obtained in a bivariate plot of quantitative finger data showed the Berbers (males and females) as the most differentiated population in the Mediterranean context. Dermatoglyphic data failed to indi…
