Man the Hunter or man the hunter? Terminological confusion, gendered hunting, and gender bias
Immune proteins recovered in tooth enamel as a biochemical record of health in past populations
The enamel proteome includes a range of proteins that are well-preserved in archaeological settings but have so far received less study than those associated with sex-estimation of enamel. We look beyond sex-specific sequencing of amelogenin to investigate the potential of several serum proteins, including immunoglobulin gamma (IgG), the major immunoglobulin found in blood serum, and C-reactive protein (CRP), which is associated with inflammatory…
Not up in smoke
Ash and black char samples from seven combustion features at CA-ALA-11, an Early to Middle Period (ca. 2500 cal BCE to 585 cal CE) shellmound site on the San Francisco Bay shoreline, were analyzed for lipid, isotope, and phytolith content. Three features were intermingled with human burials and four were from nearby contexts not directly associated with human remains. Unlike more fragile biomolecules and floral remains, lipids and phytoliths can …
Sex Ratio, Health, and Social Status
This article presents new information pertaining to the demographic profile of the juvenile burial assemblage ( n = 39) from a Late Holocene site located on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. CA-ALA-329 is commonly referred to as Ryan Mound and now bears the Muwekma Ohlone name Mánni Muwékma Kúksú Hóowok Yatiš Túnnešte-tka , which means “place where the people of the kúksú (bighead) pendants are buried.” This site has been extensively st…

Female hunters of the early Americas
Sexual division of labor with females as gatherers and males as hunters is a major empirical regularity of hunter-gatherer ethnography, suggesting an ancestral behavioral pattern. We present an archeological discovery and meta-analysis that challenge the man-the-hunter hypothesis. Excavations at the Andean highland site of Wilamaya Patjxa reveal a 9000-year-old human burial (WMP6) associated with a hunting toolkit of stone projectile points and a…
Ancient arctic pyro-technologies
Experimentally Derived Sedimentary, Molecular, and Isotopic Characteristics of Bone-Fueled Hearths
Molecular and isotopic analysis of sediments from archaeological combustion features is a relatively new area of study. Applications can inform us about ancient pyrotechnologies and patterns of animal exploitation in a wide range of human contexts, but may be particularly informative with regard to ancient hunter-gatherers. Our analyses of sediments from experimental bone and wood fires, and from controlled laboratory heating sequences, provide f…
High-resolution mapping and analysis of shiny grooved rock surfaces
Aquatic Adaptations and the Adoption of Arctic Pottery Technology
The late adoption of pottery technology in the North American Arctic between 2,500 and 2,800 years ago coincides with the development of a specialized maritime economy. Arctic pottery technologies present an excellent case study for examining possible correlations between hunter-gatherer pottery and aquatic resource use. Review of the timing and distribution of early pottery in Alaska shows that early pottery is rare and dates at the earliest to …
Lipid residues preserved in sheltered bedrock features at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, New Mexico
[Research Article]Bedrock features represent various economic, social, and symbolic aspects of past societies, but have historically received little study, particularly in North America. Fortunately, new techniques for analyzing spatial configurations, use-wear, and organic residues are beginning to unlock more of the interpretive potential of these features. Though preliminary in nature, the present study contributes to this trend by documenting…
Lipid biomarkers and compound specific δ13C analysis indicate early development of a dual-economic system for the Arctic Small Tool tradition in northern Alaska
Modeling the costs and benefits of manufacturing expedient milling tools
More than acorns and small seeds
Investigating the presence of ancient absorbed organic residues in groundstone using GC–MS and other analytical techniques
Fatty acid analysis of prehistoric burned rocks
