  • No Evidence from Genome-wide Data of a Khazar Origin for the Ashkenazi Jews

Doron M Behar, Mait Metspalu et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2013

The origin and history of the Ashkenazi Jewish population have long been of great interest, and advances in high-throughput genetic analysis have recently provided a new approach for investigating these topics. We and others have argued on the basis of genome-wide data that the Ashkenazi Jewish population derives its ancestry from a combination of sources tracing to both Europe and the Middle East. It has been claimed, however, through a reanalys…

  • Mitochondrial DNA Sequence Variation in Greeks

Anastasia Kouvatsi, Nikoletta Karaiskou et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2001•Citada por: 2•Referências: 2

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences were determined in 54 unrelated Greeks, coming from different regions in Greece, for both segments HVR-I and HVR-II. Fifty-two different mtDNA haplotypes were revealed, one of which was shared by three individuals. A very low heterogeneity was found among Greek regions. No one cluster of lineages was specific to individuals coming from a certain region. The average pairwise difference distributio…

  • The Genetic Legacy of Paleolithic Homo sapiens sapiens in Extant Europeans

Open Access•Ornella Semino, Giuseppe Passarino et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2000

A genetic perspective of human history in Europe was derived from 22 binary markers of the nonrecombining Y chromosome (NRY). Ten lineages account for >95% of the 1007 European Y chromosomes studied. Geographic distribution and age estimates of alleles are compatible with two Paleolithic and one Neolithic migratory episode that have contributed to the modern European gene pool. A significant correlation between the NRY haplotype data and principa…

  • Genetic study in Greek Sarakatsans. I. Blood groups and enzyme polymorphisms

Open Access•Anastasia Kouvatsi, Costas Triantaphyllidis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1994

A random sample from the endogamic population of Greek Sarakatsans has been studied for eight blood groups, eleven enzymic genetic systems and haemoglobin variants. The allelic frequencies of the polymorphic loci have been compared with those of other samples from the Greek mainland and other European populations. The Sarakatsans tend to resemble their neighbours. The comparison with European populations indicates that the Sarakatsans have gene f…
