  • Appendicitis

Valerie A Lawrence, Michael R Tuley et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•1996

Objectives. Mexican Americans (MAs), compared to white non‐Hispanics (WNHs), have higher rates of biliary disease, noninsulin dependent diabetes, and endstage renal disease but lower rates of lung cancer, hip fractures, and mortality from coronary heart disease. Relatively little research has been done to identify other ethnic differences in disease incidence. We used surgical procedure rates to confirm known ethnic differences and to explore our…

  • Coronary risk factors and clinical gallbladder disease

Andrew K Diehl, Steven M Haffner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Citada por: 14•Referências: 30

We examined the relationship of "coronary" risk factors to clinical gallbladder disease prevalence in a cross-sectional survey. Persons with hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, or low high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol levels had elevated risks for clinical gallbladder disease. Smokers of 20 pack-years or more and infrequent users of alcohol had increased risks, as did persons with hypertension or diabetes mellitus. After adjusting for …

  • Risk of postmenopausal hip fracture in Mexican American women

Richard L Bauer, Andrew K Diehl et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1986•Citada por: 6•Referências: 13

To assess the risk of hip fracture in Mexican Americans, the ethnicity of 80 women aged 50 years and over admitted with hip fractures to a Texas hospital was compared with that of age-matched women hospitalized for other reasons. The risk of fracture for Mexican Americans was only 35 per cent that of Whites (95% CI = 19 per cent, 65 per cent). This finding was confirmed in a chart survey performed in a second hospital population. These results su…

  • A simple language-based acculturation scale for Mexican Americans

Richard A Deyo, Andrew K Diehl et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•Citada por: 60•Referências: 2

A simple scale for quantifying English use among Mexican Americans was constructed from four brief questions which proved to have excellent scaling characteristics by Guttman Scalogram Analysis in two independent data sets. Construct validity was established by significant associations of the scale with ethnicity, place of birth, generation within the United States, and type of neighborhood. Highly significant associations were found between scal…

  • Death certification by British doctors

    Andrew K Diehl, D W Gau•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1982•Citada por: 4•Referências: 1

Regional differences in mortality from cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, strokes, and other causes have been observed in England and Wales. To determine to what extent the death certification practices of doctors influence these variations, we surveyed 123 British general practitioners and housemen. Each doctor completed death certificates based on fictitious case histories. We found that diagnostic groupings did not vary significant…

  • Autosomal Genome-Wide Linkage Analysis to Identify Loci for Gallbladder Wall Thickness in Mexican Americans

Narahari Samudrala, Vidya S Farook et al.

The significance of gallbladder wall thickness (GBWT) in regard to gallbladder disease (GBD) is not completely understood. Thickening of the gallbladder wall has been observed in patients with acute calculous and acalculous cholecystitis and chronic cholecystitis. However, various pathologic processes, such as gallbladder cancer and nonbiliary disorders such as liver cirrhosis and viral hepatitis, could also cause thickening of the gallbladder wa…
