  • Designing for responsibility

Open Access•Venkat Aryan, Christa Liedtke et al.•ARTICLE•The Design Journal•2026

This study examines how responsibility is conceptualized and operationalized in a design-led technology development through a retrospective analysis of a biofaçade system as a case-study. Using value-sensitive design (VSD) and the values hierarchy framework, it traces how ethical, environmental, and social values were identified, negotiated, and translated into design requirements. The findings show that responsibility is not a fixed design attri…

    Open Access•Uta Sailer, Yvonne Friedrich et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2024

The goal of the study was to determine which aspects of interpersonal touch interactions lead to a positive or negative experience. Previous research has focused primarily on physical characteristics. We suggest that this may not be sufficient to fully capture the complexity of the experience. Specifically, we examined how fulfilment of psychological needs influences touch experiences and how this relates to physical touch characteristics and sit…

  • Combining model-based analysis with phenomenological insight

    Sarah Diefenbach, Marc Hassenzahl•ARTICLE•Qualitative Psychology•2019

While a model-based analysis of behavior and experience is helpful in psychological research, the lack of approaches for the integration of qualitative data may lead to limited insights about essentially rich concepts. To overcome this, the present article suggests a combination of phenomenological and model-based analysis of qualitative data. We apply this approach in the context of consumer psychology and the hedonic/utilitarian model (Hirschma…

  • Technology-Mediated Relationship Maintenance in Romantic Long-Distance Relationships

    Wei-Chi Chien, Marc Hassenzahl•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2017

Many routine relationship maintenance activities, such as supporting each other in the household, rely on responsive interaction. Unfortunately, the physical separation typical for long-distance relationships severely limits the opportunities to support each other in everyday life. This paper reports an autoethnographical research through design of this, in human–computer interaction (HCI) still quite uncharted, territory. In over two years of de…

  • The Inference of Perceived Usability From Beauty

    Marc Hassenzahl, Andrew Monk•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2010

A review of 15 papers reporting 25 independent correlations of perceived beauty with perceived usability showed a remarkably high variability in the reported coefficients. This may be due to methodological inconsistencies. For example, products are often not selected systematically, and statistical tests are rarely performed to test the generality of findings across products. In addition, studies often restrict themselves to simply reporting corr…

  • Arguing for Aesthetics in Human-Computer Interaction

    Open Access•Noam Tractinsky, Marc Hassenzahl•BOOK•i-com•2005•Referências: 3

This article argues for the importance of aesthetics in human-computer interaction (HCI). Tractinsky and Hassenzahl posit that aesthetics, often relegated to a secondary role in usability discussions, plays a crucial role in user experience. They contend that aesthetic qualities contribute significantly to the perceived usability and overall value of interactive products. The authors challenge the traditional view of aesthetics as superficial or …

  • The Interplay of Beauty, Goodness, and Usability in Interactive Products

    Marc Hassenzahl•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2004

Two studies considered the interplay between user-perceived usability (i.e., pragmatic attributes), hedonic attributes (e.g., stimulation, identification), goodness (i.e., satisfaction), and beauty of 4 different MP3-player skins. As long as beauty and goodness stress the subjective valuation of a product, both were related to each other. However, the nature of goodness and beauty was found to differ. Goodness depended on both perceived usability…
