  • Hearing loss and hearing aid use in Hispanic adults

David Lee, D J Lee et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1991

Data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were employed to investigate the prevalence of hearing loss and hearing aid use in Mexican-American, Cuban-American, and Puerto Rican adults. Hearing loss was 6 to 14 times more prevalent in older (ages 54 to 74) vs younger (ages 20 through 34) subjects. Cuban Americans and Mexican Americans tended to have a similar prevalence of hearing loss, whereas Puerto Ricans had markedly lower …

  • Archaeological Survey at Fort Hood, Texas, Fiscal Year 1986, Other Training Areas

    Catherine S Mueller-Wille, D L Carlson•REPORT•1990•Citada por: 1

A cultural resources survey was conducted at Fort Hood, Texas. As a result of the survey, 188 archaeological sites were discovered or relocated, and recorded. The 104 prehistoric sites show evidence of human occupation spanning the last 10,000 years. The 84 historic sites represent the initial migrations into Central Texas by Anglo settlers beginning about 1850 and ending with the purchase of the land by the Army in the 1940s and 1950s

  • Events in the Archaeological Context and Archaeological Explanation [with Comments and Replies]

    Robert L Brooks, R L Bettinger et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1982•Citada por: 19•Referências: 3

Many archaeologists have expressed dissatisfaction with the degree of explanatory power provided by the "new archaeology." It is the author's contention that this failure of explanation is due to a continued emphasis on the modal character of archaeological data. The variation in a cultural system's activity structure has not been perceived as influencing the archaeological context. A heuristic device is suggested to help archaeologists conceptua…

  • Factor Analysis, Random Data, and Patterned Results

    Open Access•Robert K Vierra, D L Carlson•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1981•Citada por: 10•Referências: 24

Multivariate statistical techniques such as factor analysis are capable of producing patterned results with most, if not all, data matrices. This paper demonstrates that patterned results are obtainable when principal component analysis is applied to a random data set. It is suggested that Bartlett's test for the statistical significance of a correlation matrix be employed in deciding whether a factor analysis of the matrix is justified

  • Maritime Hunter-Gatherers

    David R Yesner, William S Ayres et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1980•Citada por: 159•Referências: 13

In a recent discussion of prehistoric developments in coastal Peru, Osborn has drawn attention to the "uniqueness" of the Peruvian littoral in providing large amounts of nutrients to support locally high population densities and a base for the development of Peruvian civilization. This bounteous resource base is contrasted with that of other maritime environments, which are seen to be relatively unproductive. The present article takes issue with …
