  • A new axiomatization of discounted expected utility

Open Access•Berenice Anne Neumann, Marc Oliver Rieger•ARTICLE•Theory and Decision•2023

We present a new axiomatization of the classical discounted expected utility model, which is primarily used as a decision model for consumption streams under risk. This new axiomatization characterizes discounted expected utility as a model that satisfies natural extensions of standard axioms as in the one-period case and two additional axioms. The first axiom is a weak form of time separability. It only requires that the choice between certain c…

  • Can television reduce xenophobia? The case of East Germany

Open Access•Lars Hornuf, Marc Oliver Rieger et al.•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2023

Can television have a mitigating effect on xenophobia? To explore this question, we investigate a natural experiment in which individuals in some regions of East Germany could not—due to their geographic location—consume West German television until 1989. By analyzing survey data from the periods before and after German reunification, we provide evidence that individuals who received West German television during the GDR period and were thus more…

  • Keep that mask on

Open Access•Xenia Matschke, Marc Oliver Rieger•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2022

We study planned changes in protective routines after the COVID-19 pandemic: in a survey in Germany among >650 respondents, we find that the majority plans to use face masks in certain situations even after the end of the pandemic. We observe that this willingness is strongly related to the perception that there is something to be learned from East Asians’ handling of pandemics, even when controlling for perceived protection by wearing masks. Giv…

  • Uncritical Patriotism and Belief in Covid-19 Conspiracies

    Open Access•Marc Oliver Rieger•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 8

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has also led to many conspiracy theories. While the origin of the pandemic in China led some, including former US president Donald Trump, to dub the pathogen "Chinese virus" and to support anti-Chinese conspiracy narratives, it caused Chinese state officials to openly support anti-US conspiracy theories about the "true" origin of the virus. In this article, we study whether nationalism, or more precisely uncr…

  • The immigrant-native gap in risk and time preferences in Germany

    Open Access•Sumit S Deole, Marc Oliver Rieger•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 5

We present new descriptive evidence on the immigrant-native gap in risk and time preferences in Germany, one of immigrants’ most preferred destination countries. Using the recent waves of the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) dataset, we find that the immigrant-native gap in risk preferences has widened for recent immigration cohorts, especially around the time of the 2015 European Refugee Crisis. We attribute the recent widening to decreased assimilat…

  • Covid-19 and the Wuhan Diary –how does the overseas Chinese community react to group criticism

Open Access•Mei Wang, Marc Oliver Rieger•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese Political…•2022•Referências: 45

We conduct an online survey to explore how Chinese people living in Germany perceive and react to group criticism in the context of the debate on the Wuhan Diary, a chronicle about life during the lockdown in Wuhan. We find that the majority rating of the book is a lukewarm “neither like nor dislike.” Most participants are open to criticism in principle and do not agree that the book only spreads so-called “negative-energy”. However, many partici…

  • Trust in Government Actions During the Covid-19 Crisis

    Open Access•Marc Oliver Rieger, Mei Wang•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2022•Citada por: 42•Referências: 34

The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic puts countries and their governments in an unprecedented situation. Strong countermeasures have been implemented in most places, but how much do people trust their governments in handling this crisis? Using data from a worldwide survey, conducted between March 20th and April 22nd, 2020, with more than 100,000 participants, we study people's perceptions of government reactions in 57 countries. We find that media fre…

  • Institutional and cultural determinants of speed of government responses during Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Diqiang Chen, Diefeng Peng et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2021

This article examines institutional and cultural determinants of the speed of government responses during the COVID-19 pandemic. We define the speed as the marginal rate of stringency index change. Based on cross-country data, we find that collectivism is associated with higher speed of government response. We also find a moderating role of trust in government, i.e., the association of individualism-collectivism on speed is stronger in countries …

  • What Makes Young People Think Positively About Social Distancing During the Corona Crisis in Germany

    Open Access•Marc Oliver Rieger•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

In a survey among 250 subjects recruited at a German university and predominantly university students, we elicit opinions about social distancing, i. e., the necessity to keep away from other people to slow down the speed of the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 epidemics. The good news is that most students are supportive to it. A minority, however, does not completely agree. We find that how many elderly persons subjects knew personally, was the most signific…

  • The Impact of Culture on Loss Aversion

Open Access•Mei Wang, Marc Oliver Rieger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2016•Citada por: 15•Referências: 10

Based on the literature on the relationship between culture, emotion, and loss aversion, we derive that culture can influence the degree of loss aversion. To test our hypotheses, we conduct a standardized survey in 53 countries worldwide that includes the questions from the Hofstede survey on cultural dimensions as well as lottery questions on loss aversion. The results show that individualism, power distance, and masculinity increase loss aversi…
