  • The second-hand clothing trade and moral economic contestations over (re)distribution in Tanzania

    G Kuiper•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary African…•2024•Referências: 24

Most clothing consumed in Tanzania is second-hand. The long-established trade in such clothes – locally known as mitumba – has proliferated since the 1980s and has sparked much debate. Critics consider the country's dependency on the import of discarded clothes an expression of the country's disadvantaged position in the global distribution of wealth. But mitumba also give consumers the opportunity to dress fashionably and provide small-scale tra…

  • Ethnographic fieldwork among local in-laws

    Open Access•G Kuiper, Grete Schönebeck•ARTICLE•Paideuma•2024

Collaborative research has received increasing attention in and beyond anthropology. This article describes research in which collaboration is not consciously built into the research design, but in which collaboration is a given, due to the researcher being accompanied during the research process. More specifically, it discusses the implications of having a romantic partner or spouse originating from the region where the anthropological research …

  • Export horticulture and labour migration in Kenya

    Open Access•G Kuiper, C Greiner•ARTICLE•Geoforum•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 17

Based on a study of globalized export horticulture at Lake Naivasha, Kenya, this paper explores urban development at the intersections of foreign capital investments and translocal labour mobility. We argue that patterns of translocality largely track the specific requirements and temporalities of the cut flower and vegetable industries, lending an ephemeral and provisional character to the town of Naivasha and the urban sprawl encompassing it. D…

  • They just move in with relatives

    G Kuiper•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern African Studies•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 29

Over the past four decades, the small town of Naivasha in Kenya has attracted tens of thousands of labour migrants. These migrants are looking for employment on one of the many flower farms located on the shores of Lake Naivasha. This article examines how the migrants, who mostly do not settle in Naivasha permanently, carve out space for themselves in the residential areas where they rent housing. These settlements were not planned for by the gov…

  • Sustainability and Depoliticisation

    Open Access•G Kuiper, Andreas Gemählich•ARTICLE•Africa Spectrum•2017•Citada por: 7•Referências: 25

This article focuses on the emergence of certification schemes in the cut-flower industry in Naivasha, Kenya. It is shown that, although this turn is often legitimised through references to 'sustainability,' the change was mainly brought about by the growing importance of a new value chain of 'direct sales.' The article furthermore elaborates on the most well-known certificate in Naivasha, Fairtrade. This certificate aims to enhance sustainabilit…
