Excavations at Gilmerton Cove, Edinburgh, 2002
A research project was undertaken at Gilmerton Cove, Edinburgh by CFA Archaeology Ltd in advance of its development as a visitor attraction by City of Edinburgh Council. Historical research indicates that the Cove was built in the early 18th century. Excavation revealed hitherto unknown details of the layout of the Cove, including the presence of features cut into the rock floors; a well or cistern; a sump; and a second entrance
Excavation of a Bronze Age kerbed cairn at Olcote, Breasclete, Near Calanais, Isle of Lewis
An archaeological excavation was carried out by the Centre for Field Archaeology (CFA) from October to December 1995 of a Bronze Age kerbed cairn at Olcote, Breasclete, Isle of Lewis (NGR: NB 2180 3475). The cairn was discovered by CFA during an evaluation of a dense scatter of worked and unworked quartz made by local archaeologists, Margaret and Ron Curtis. Quality Quartz
This paper discusses an assemblage of worked and smashed quartz associated with a Bronze Age kerbed cairn at Olcote. Most analytical treatments of quartz in Scottish prehistory have been structured around a pervasive dualism: quartz working is either the mundane use of a low quality raw material or the ritual use of a symbolically laden referent. Excavation of two burials at Galson, Isle of Lewis, 1993 and 1996
Two burials of Iron Age date were recorded at Galson during rescue excavations in 1993 and 1996, as a result of erosion of the steep, north-facing sand-dune face, which rises over 6 m between the shingle beach and a field wall.This erosion face is the site of a well-known cemetery and settlement extending in date at least from the Iron Age to the Norse period.The burials are placed in the context of past discoveries at Galson and a brief consider…
Artificial platforms of possible Iron Age or Dark Age date on Dùn Mór, Dornie, Skye & Lochalsh
Report a topographical survey and trial excavations that were conducted on a tree-covered ridge near Dornie. A number of artificially enhanced platforms were discovered at different levels on the ridge; these had been created by connecting bedrock outcrops with retaining walls. An excavation in advance of pipeline construction, sponsored by Shell Chemicals UK Ltd, has provided further information on the nature of the Roman military site on the east bank of the River Avon. The trench revealed that an expansion was the first structure abutted to the south of the Antonine Wall, and that this was subsequently replaced by a small fort

This report describes the results of an archaeological field survey of the Bhaltos peninsula in Lewis. The results are assessed in the light of both older research and the continuing programmes of excavation and palaeoenvironmental analysis in the area. The examples and distributions of various site-types provide a comparison with more general models recently proposed for settlement in the Western Isles and appear to suggest a series of settlemen…
