Securing Democracy
Starting with the Facebook‐Cambridge Analytica scandal and its link to Brexit and the 2016 US elections, the nexus among online political advertising, micro‐targeting, and data‐driven electoral campaigning has revealed its disruptive potential for democracies. While facilitating innovative modes of direct engagement between politics and citizens, online political advertising also allows parties and other political actors to enact strategies that …

The study of private political finance in Europe
Mapping private party funding regulation. Deregulation in sight
This article presents a longitudinal comparative analysis of the regulation of private funding to political parties in 15 West European democracies and explores how these rules have changed under the most recent wave of political finance reforms. In particular, the article questions whether a deregulation of political finance regulation may be in sight, with a downsizing of the role of the state in the political finance domain. While evidence doe…
Does regulation matter? Trajectories of party organizational change in Western Europe (1970-2010)
The aim of this article is to verify whether a relationship exists between partly laws and party organizational change. While the prevailing contextualist perspective enhances the weight of social, economic and technological factors in shaping party change, we maintain that the intensity of party regulation plays a major role in this respect. Based on some basic assumption of Organizational Institutionalism, the article adopts the rationale of th…
Gendered patterns in candidates’ campaign fundraising
The lack of financial resources is an often-cited hurdle for women pursuing political careers. However, empirical analysis of the dynamics of the private funding of women candidates and its potential implications for their political careers is still scant, particularly for countries outside the anglophone regions. This paper contributes to the scholarly debate by focusing on the gendered patterns in campaign fundraising in Italy, where radical ch…
Party funding in Italy
The article reviews the ‘classic’ organizational models of political parties in the light of the evolution of party financing in Italy, emphasizing agreements and disagreements. Based on the parties’ official balance sheets, it presents empirical evidence on the different sources of party income over-time as well as the parties’ own narrative concerning public funding from 1974, when direct public funding of political parties was introduced, unti…
Women’s access to the political sphere in Italy
This special issue focuses on the tension between the formal rules aimed at reducing the disparity between the genders in public office and the informal barriers to women’s political participation. These also include the way in which media systems portray women, taking into consideration their role either in promoting equal opportunities for women or, on the contrary, in contributing to the diffusion of gender stereotypes. This article focus on t…
Doomed to fail. The adoption of gendered party finance in Italy at an inhospitable time
Italy stands out as one of the few countries in Europe to have introduced policies linking public funding for political parties to measures to enhance women’s political representation. However, such policies have proved to be flawed, failing to meet the objectives that they aimed to address. Starting from these observations, this paper opens the ‘black box’ of the policy cycle and analyses the stage of policy formulation that led to gendered part…
Promoting Gender Equality through Party Funding
Given the growing importance of state subsidies as a source of party income, several countries have introduced policies that link the provision of party funding to the promotion of gender equality in political representation. Variations in the assignment of public funding—that is, financial incentives and cuts—are increasingly employed to promote equal gender participation in intraparty politics and in public office. However, we know little about…
Italian Political Parties and Their Organisation beyond National Borders
According to the most recent statistics, 8.8% of the Italian population is registered as living abroad. This figure has increased considerably following the 2007 global economic crisis, with the number of Italians abroad rising from 3.1 million in 2006 to over 5 million in 2018 (+70% in only 12 years). Additionally, legislation on voting from abroad was amended to allow for postal voting and established 18 reserved seats for Italians abroad. Thes…

Party Support to Social Movements
The main objective of this article is to explore the logic underlying party support to social movements. Do political parties respond to social movements only when electoral incentives are at stake, as movements’ activists have often lamented and rational-oriented scholarly approaches have maintained? This article tackles this question reconstructing the conditions that led the Dutch Social Democratic party to turn supportive to the social moveme…
The Consequences of Social Movements
Social movements have attracted much attention in recent years, both from scholars and among the wider public. This book examines the consequences of social movements, covering such issues as the impact of social movements on the life course of participants and the population in general, on political elites and markets, and on political parties and processes of social movement institutionalization. The volume makes a significant contribution to r…
Fit or Misfit? Italian Parties in Europe
We depart from the argument that policy congruence between the national and the EU parties has a role in bridging the democratic deficit of the EU. We assess it for the difficult case of Italy, where the issue of parties' transnational affiliation is incredibly divisive, and the party system is in a state of flux. Using the EU Profiler data, we are able to show that its parties are remarkably congruent. Yet, we suggest that congruence might overe…
A Self-interested Legislator? Party Regulation in Italy
What factors drive the evolution of party regulation? And do political and societal changes have an impact on how legislators shape policy reforms? This article answers these questions by observing the evolution of the regulation of political parties in Italy from 1948 to 2012. Through an in-depth analysis of the major sources of party law of the country, the author shows that corruption scandals and societal pressure, alone, may be insufficient …
The world upside down
Political finance regulation is often praised in terms of its ability to introduce equality among political parties, to create more transparent political parties and to lower the influence of affluent donors on the political decision-making process. Little examination exists, however, of the effectiveness of this type of regulation. This article aims to fill this gap by addressing whether and to what extent different types of public funding regul…
