This article examines the epistemic role of literary imagination in shaping plural images of migrant and refugee children and in critiquing humanitarian frameworks that tend to portray them under the sign of passivity and tutelage. This work discusses a range of literary scenes framed by Primo Levi's narrative.The scenes all include child characters and/or narrators placed in contexts of flight, compulsory displacement and refuge, where their lives are often endangered.We are interested in how the narratives elicit specific gazes and forms of apprehension, as well as in how, in the process, they introduce ethical demands and add to the construction of new modes of attention…
Playing chess against the military
My contribution engages in close-reading analysis of the award-winning picture book The Composition, written by Chilean author Antonio Skármeta and illustrated by Alfonso Ruano. It explores the political potential of fiction to recast children as creative subjects with political awareness and instruments to resist oppressive discourses and practices in the context of military dictatorships
