  • Effectively implementing psychiatric advance directives to promote self-determination of treatment among people with mental illness

Eric B Elbogen, Jane Swanson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•2007•Citada por: 3

Statutes on psychiatric advance directives (PADs) allow competent individuals to document instructions for future mental health treatment in the event of an incapacitating crisis. PADs are aimed at promoting a stronger sense of patient self-determination, considered a central tenet of psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery; however, it is unknown what factors (if any) lead psychiatric patients with PADs to experience this benefit long term. The…

  • Barriers to Antiretroviral Adherence

Michael Mugavero, Joachim Ostermann et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Patient Care and STDs•2006

Among HIV-infected persons, high-level adherence to antiretroviral medications (>90%-95%) is associated with improved immunologic, virologic, and clinical outcomes, and is necessary to prevent the emergence of viral resistance. This study examines whether lifetime traumatic events including physical and sexual abuse, are associated with antiretroviral nonadherence. We present a cross-sectional analysis of the Coping with HIV/AIDS in the Southeast…

  • Prevalence of Childhood Sexual Abuse and Physical Trauma in an HIV-Positive Sample From the Deep South

Kathryn Whetten, Jane Leserman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Citada por: 2•Referências: 34

We examined prevalence and predictors of trauma among HIV-infected persons in the Deep South using data from the Coping with HIV/AIDS in the Southeast (CHASE) study. Over 50% of CHASE participants were abused during their lives, with approximately 30% experiencing abuse before age 13, regardless of gender. Caregiver characteristics were associated with childhood abuse. Abuse is related to increases in high–HIV-risk activities. The findings help e…

Results. Trust in care providers was associated with increased HIV-related out-patient clin…

  • Effectiveness of Antipsychotic Drugs in Patients with Chronic Schizophrenia

Jeffrey A Lieberman, T Scott Stroup et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2005

BACKGROUND: The relative effectiveness of second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic drugs as compared with that of older agents has been incompletely addressed, though newer agents are currently used far more commonly. We compared a first-generation antipsychotic, perphenazine, with several newer drugs in a double-blind study. METHODS: A total of 1493 patients with schizophrenia were recruited at 57 U.S. sites and randomly assigned to receive ol…

  • How Trauma, Recent Stressful Events, and PTSD Affect Functional Health Status and Health Utilization in HIV-Infected Patients in the South

Jane Leserman, Kathryn Whetten et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2005

OBJECTIVE: In addition to biological markers of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease progression, physical functioning, and utilization of health care may also be important indicators of health status in HIV-infected patients. There is insufficient understanding of the psychosocial predictors of health-related physical functioning and use of health services among those with this chronic disease. Therefore, the current study examines how tra…

  • Endorsement of personal benefit of outpatient commitment among persons with severe mental illness

Marvin S Swartz, Jane Swanson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•2003•Citada por: 1•Referências: 28

This study examines whether individuals who experienced involuntary outpatient commitment (OPC) attribute benefit to this intervention. It was found that the majority of experimental subjects who underwent a period of OPC did not personally endorse OPC's benefits at the end of the study, either because they did not think it improved treatment adherence or because they rejected their own need for continued treatment. However, at the end of the stu…

  • Does involuntary outpatient commitment lead to more intensive treatment

Henry R Wagner, Marvin S Swartz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•2003•Citada por: 1•Referências: 18

Studies of involuntary outpatient commitment (OPC) among persons with severe mental illness have concluded that OPC is only effective in improving treatment outcomes when it is sustained for 6 months or longer and is combined with frequent outpatient services. This article explores factors that influence the delivery of outpatient services to subjects in a randomized trial of OPC and finds 2 general patterns. Outpatient visits were more frequent …
