The late Pleistocene glaciation in the Bogchigir Valleys (Pamir, Tajikistan) based on 10 Be surface exposure dating
Glacial chronologies from the Pamir may not only provide insights into past changes in temperature, but also into past changes in precipitation related to the northern-hemispheric westerlies and the monsoonal circulation. We present 18 new exposure ages from the Bogchigir Valleys that complement and refine our previous studies in these valleys. The most extensive dated glaciation in the area occurred ~ 100 ka, during Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (…
Years of Cosmic Radiation and Solar Activity From Ice Cores and Tree Rings
Understanding the temporal variation of cosmic radiation and solar activity during the Holocene is essential for studies of the solar-terrestrial relationship. Cosmic-ray produced radionuclides, such as 10 Be and 14 C which are stored in polar ice cores and tree rings, offer the unique opportunity to reconstruct the history of cosmic radiation and solar activity over many millennia. Although records from different archives basically agree, they a…
Reconstruction of a complex late Quaternary glacial landscape in the Cordillera de Cochabamba (Bolivia) based on a morphostratigraphic and multiple dating approach
Although glacial landscapes have previously been used for the reconstruction of late Quaternary glaciations in the Central Andes, only few data exist for the Eastern Cordillera in Bolivia. Here, we present results from detailed morphostratigraphic mapping and new data of surface exposure dating (SED), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), and radiocarbon dating ( 14 C) from the Huara Loma Valley, Cordillera de Cochabamba (Bolivia). Discrepanci…
Glacial advances constrained by 10 Be exposure dating of bedrock landslides, Kyrgyz Tien Shan
Numerous large landslide deposits occur in the Tien Shan, a tectonically active intraplate orogen in Central Asia. Yet their significance in Quaternary landscape evolution and natural hazard assessment remains unresolved due to the lack of "absolute" age constraints. Here we present the first 10 Be exposure ages for three prominent (> 10 7 m 3 ) bedrock landslides that blocked major rivers and formed lakes, two of which subsequently breached, in …
Multiple cosmogenic nuclides document complex Pleistocene exposure history of glacial drifts in Terra Nova Bay (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica)
Geomorphological and glacial geological surveys and multiple cosmogenic nuclide analyses ( 10 Be, 26 Al, and 21 Ne) allowed us to reconstruct the chronology of variations prior to the last glacial maximum of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) and valley glaciers in the Terra Nova Bay region. Glacially scoured coastal piedmonts with round-topped mountains occur below the highest local erosional trimline. They represent relict landscape features e…
Combination of Numerical Dating Techniques Using 10 Be in Rock Boulders and 14 C of Resilient Soil Organic Matter for Reconstructing the Chronology of Glacial and Periglacial Processes in a High Alpin…
Glacier fluctuations and paleoclimatic oscillations during the Late Quaternary in Val di Rabbi (Trentino, northern Italy) were reconstructed using a combination of absolute dating techniques ( 14 C and 10 Be) and soil chemical characterization. Extraction and dating of the stable fraction of soil organic matter (SOM) gave valuable information about the minimum age of soil formation and contributed to the deciphering of geomorphic surface dynamics…
Be exposure ages of a rock avalanche and a late glacial moraine in Alta Valtellina, Italian Alps
New chronological and stratigraphical data on the Ivrea amphitheatre (Piedmont, NW Italy)
Glaciar León, Chilean Patagonia
Glaciar León is a temperate, grounded outlet of the eastern North Patagonian Icefield (NPI). It terminates at an active calving margin in Lago Leones, a 10 km long proglacial lake. We take a multidisciplinary approach to its description and use ASTER imagery and clast sedimentology to describe the geomorphology of the glacier and its associated moraines. We date periods of glacier retreat over the last 2500 years using a combination of lichenomet…
Late Pleistocene glacial chronology of the Pietrele Valley, Retezat Mountains, Southern Carpathians constrained by 10Be exposure ages and pedological investigations
First results of cosmogenic dated pre-Last Glaciation erratics from the Montoz area, Jura Mountains, Switzerland
Evidence from the Rio Bayo valley on the extent of the North Patagonian Icefield during the Late Pleistocene–Holocene Transition
This paper presents data on the extent of the North Patagonian Icefield during the Late Pleistocene–Holocene transition using cosmogenic nuclide exposure age and optically stimulated luminescence dating. We describe geomorphological and geochronological evidence for glacier extent in one of the major valleys surrounding the North Patagonian Icefield, the Rio Bayo valley. Geomorphological mapping provides evidence for the existence of two types of…
Surface exposure dating of moraines in the Kromer valley (Silvretta Mountains, Austria)-evidence for glacial response to the 8.2 ka event in the Eastern Alps
10 Be dating of a pronounced glacier advance (‘Kromer Stadial’) in the western part of the Silvretta Mountains (western Austria) yielded ages ranging from 8010±360 to 8690±410 years with a mean age for moraine stabilization of 8410±690 years. Hence, the Kromer Stadial, which was previously considered as early Preboreal, may represent the glacier response to the early phase of the ‘8.2-ka event’, as it is recorded in the Greenland ice-cores. The g…

Late Quaternary glacial and climate history of the Pamir Mountains derived from cosmogenic 10 Be exposure ages
Moraines southwest of Lake Yashilkul, Pamir, Tajikistan, were dated using 10 Be exposure ages of boulder surfaces. We found evidence for (1) an extensive glaciation ∼60,000 yr ago; (2) a less extensive glacial advance, which deposited a characteristic hummocky moraine lobe with exposure ages ranging from ∼11,000 to 47,000 yr, probably deposited at or before 47,000 yr ago; and (3) lateral moraines with exposure ages of ∼40,000 yr, 27,000 yr and 19…
Flint procurement strategies in the Late Lower Palaeolithic recorded by in situ produced cosmogenic 10Be in Tabun and Qesem Caves (Israel)
Can We Use Cosmogenic Isotopes to Date Stone Artifacts
Two chert artifacts from the region near Luxor, Egypt have yielded concentrations of cosmogenic 10 Be that allow calculation of nominal exposure ages of 326,000 and 304,000 years. Both artifacts are flakes that were collected atop limestone benches of the Eocene Thebes Formation which form cliffs along the west side of the Nile. The site is at elevation 240 m and is about 15 km from the Nile. Tools associated with these artifacts can be attribute…
AMS of 41Ca Using the CaF3 Negative Ion
High-intensity ion sources are now capable of producing negative molecular ion beams of Ca of >2μA (Middleton et al , 1989). This and the advanced status of 41 Ca AMS at several laboratories (Pennsylvania, Argonne National Laboratory, Rochester, Munich, Weizmann Institute) have revived interest in 41 Ca (T 1/2 = 1.0×10 5 yr (Mabuchi et al , 1974)) as a possible dating tool (Yamaguchi, 1963; Raisbeck & Yiou, 1979; Kubik et al , 1986)
