Drifting sand has inundated settlements and damaged agricultural land along the coasts of Western Europe for the last 700 years. The need to control sand migration has been an important driver of the management of coastal sand dunes and here we analyse original archival materials to provide new insights into historically changing coastal dune management practices. Records of coastal sand movement in Denmark, The Netherlands, Britain, Ireland and …

  • Effects of storminess, sand supply and the North Atlantic Oscillation on sand invasion and coastal dune accretion in western Portugal

    Open Access•Michèle L Clarke, Helen M Rendell•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Citada por: 6•Referências: 18

Holocene forested coastal dunes fringe the Atlantic coast of western Portugal. Mapping of dunes in the field and using air photographs shows a range of forms reflecting dominant northwest and westerly onshore wind regimes. Planting of maritime pine forests in the thirteenth and twentieth centuries was initiated because of sand invasion causing problems for human settlement and agriculture. Early Holocene dunes have a well-developed podsol and dat…

  • A 45,000-Year-Old Open-air Paleolithic Site at Riwat, Northern Pakistan

Robin Dennell, Robin W Dennell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1992•Citada por: 20•Referências: 4

Open-air sites from the last glaciation are best known from Eastern Europe and, to a lesser extent, Western Europe and the Levant. This report describes one, Site 55, from northern Pakistan, a region that has one of the best preserved loess landscapes outside Eastern Europe and China. The site comprises an unusual mixture of natural and artificial features. Most of it lies on a tilted conglomerate sheet that provided the quartzite used for making…
