Institutionalized authority and personal traits of executive heads in international organizations
The important role played by executive heads (EHs) in international organizations (IOs) has garnered significant attention and empirical EH research has advanced with individual cases of prominent heads. However, it lacks quantitative analyses of EHs' role in IOs. The main reason is the absence of comprehensive cross-IO data on EHs. This study introduces a new database comprising two datasets on the EHs who served in 18 multi-issue international …
Two Questions of Sovereignty
Respect for sovereignty is a hallmark norm for the coalition between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Third World/Global South countries since the latter supported the PRC to represent “China” at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Nevertheless, two questions on sovereignty can cause rupture, because states care about procedural and performative consequences at international organizations; whether or not the PRC and the other …

Association between Total and Individual PCB Congener Levels in Maternal Serum and Birth Weight of Newborns
Maternal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) during pregnancy is associated with a low birth weight; however, the congener-specific effects of PCB congeners are not well defined. In this study, we used maternal serum samples from the Chiba Study of Mother and Child Health (C-MACH) cohort, collected at 32 weeks of gestational age, to analyze the effects of PCB congener exposure on birth weight by examining the relationship between newborn…
Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic Exacerbation of Depressive Symptoms for Social Frailty from the Orange Registry
The increase in the rate of transition of elderly individuals to the social frailty group could have been related to the implementation of the stay-at-home order as part of the countermeasures for COVID-19. Furthermore, the increased prevalence of depressive symptoms associated with the stay-at-home order could also have influenced the increase in the prevalence of social frailty during the COVID-19 pandemic
Wronged translators in U.S.-Japan politics
This paper examines how in a political context translators/interpreters can be wronged, i.e. unfairly inculpated, due to complex and subtle power relations, and how in the name of “mistranslation” they can be blamed for the negative outcomes of international negotiations. Even where the accuracy or quality of the translation may be at issue, there is still no escaping the behind-the-scenes political maneuvering that paradoxically makes the transl…
Self-translation as translation of the self — translating the hybrid self
In this essay, I discuss self-translation, particularly autobiographical self-translation, from various perspectives relating to identities, distance, imagination, creativity, and autonomy, while reflecting on the process I experienced self-translating my autobiography, originally written in Japanese, my native and first language (L1), into English, my second language (L2). The present study is unique in that the process of self-translation is ex…
Why self-translate? – An autobiographical author-translator’s perspective
Motivation has been studied in self-translation research rather extensively. Recent studies have indicated that many of those who choose to self-translate often describe their practice of self-translation as ‘painful’. If so, why do they keep self-translating? What are the purposes of self-translation? Some may choose to self-translate due to socioeconomic conditions such as exile or immigration, while others may be motivated to self-translate ou…
