“I wasn't really welcome in that community”
Social and structural determinants of health are often spatially bound, limiting access to resources that influence health. Where people go and their interactions shape and are shaped by intersectional stigma, with profound potential impacts on health. Yet, further research is needed to understand how place intersects with intersectional stigma to affect people’s daily lives and health. To inform place-based HIV prevention and care interventions …
When Assistance is Insufficient
This qualitative research project examines the financial struggles of Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) recipients using 20 in-depth interviews and five focus groups, guided by womanist and intersectional theoretical frameworks to center lived experience, racialized gendered labor, and structural inequality. Findings reveal a consistent theme of insufficient cash assistance to sustain daily living. Participants described diverse income-supplementin…
No Man Is an Island
African American men face chronic illness earlier in life and earlier death due to higher severity of illness and poor control of chronic diseases than their white male counterparts. Preexposure and post-exposure prophylaxis PrEP and PREP have improved the odds of survival among those living with HIV. However, the anti-retroviral treatments, though effective, are only as effective as early prevention and detection and in cases where patients can …
The Disproportionate Use of Corporal Punishment on African American Children in U.S. Schools
The United States Supreme Court ruled School Corporal Punishment (SCP) constitutional, legalizing the practice in 19 states. Annually, approximately 163,333 students are subject to this practice, and 57,000 incidents involve African American students. Moreover, the lack of Federal advocacy and public knowledge of this social problem is more likely linked to SCP mainly practiced in southern states. Through the lens of Critical Race Theory, a conte…

Constructing Taxonomies
Injection drug use is a significant mode of HIV transmission. Social networks are potential avenues for behavior change among high-risk populations. Increasing knowledge should include a classification or taxonomy system of networks' attributes, risks, and needs. The current study employed 232 networks comprising 232 indexes, with 464 network members enrolled in Philadelphia. LCA revealed a three-class solution, Low-Risk, Paraphernalia Risk, and …

Watching Neighborhoods Vanish
Housing policy officials’ interest in alleviating displacement faces scrutiny for the effective implementation of housing programs and diversifying neighborhoods. While officials deliberate diversifying neighborhoods; residents focus on affordable housing, remaining in gentrifying neighborhoods and fair relocation plans. Displacement, as an outcome of gentrification, has long history in the United States. New York developer, Robert Moses, renowne…
The Road Home
Black or African American men face disproportionate rates of incarceration and poor health outcomes. Recent changes in sentencing policy have allowed individuals to return to communities after substantial periods of incarceration. Returning citizens often reenter with numerous challenges: housing, employment, medical assistance, and transportation. Analyses were conducted using multivariable logistic regression to examine the relationship between…
A Decade's Tale
According to the U.S. Department of Justice (US DOJ, 2016), African Americans have experienced disproportionate instances of police use of excessive force as a result of discriminatory practices and insufficient training. Officers are permitted to use appropriate force in specific situations; however, when force is excessive and deemed unnecessary, it then becomes an issue of concern. The U.S. Department of Justice was invited to investigate poli…
When They Return
Ties that bind
In the USA, the impact of psychological distress may be greater for Black men who have sex with men given that they may experience both racial discrimination in society at large and discrimination due to sexual orientation within Black communities. Attachments to community members may play a role in addressing psychological distress for members of this vulnerable population. This analysis is based on 312 Black men who have sex with men recruited …
Sexual contexts and the process of risk reduction
Understanding the dynamics of sexual risks for HIV among men who have sex with men has been one of the ongoing challenges of HIV prevention. While the majority of HIV-prevention interventions target individual behaviour and decision making, multiple studies point to the importance of social context in shaping risk behaviour. Analysis of qualitative data from a study of men who have sex with men, drug use and sex found that sexual encounters were …
Money, Drugs, and Bodies
Research on men who sell sex has primarily focused on psychological profiles and HIV risk factors. Substantially less literature examines the consumers in the male-to-male exchange sex dyad. This article examines the perspectives of venders and consumers. Data come from a qualitative study of a group of 26 men who recently exchanged sex for money or drugs in New York City. Findings indicate that a complex set of interactions between motivation, c…
