Perm Provincial Urban Censuses, 1860s — 1918
The article is dedicated to the study of urban population censuses in the late 19th — early 20th century Perm’ province of the Russian empire. Modern local censuses became widespread in post-reform Russian cities due to the prolonged delays of a nationwide demographic enumeration. The first urban censuses in the Middle Urals were taken in the 1860s and continued until 1918. A preliminary list of 12 censuses taken in Perm, Ekaterinburg and small p…
Urban Censuses in Post-Reform Russia
This article analyses the historiography of using late Imperial Russian city censuses. The past three decades of historical urban studies in Russia have made such an urban census data study necessary. The city census materials are a more reliable source than the official statistics comparable with national census data. The authors analyse publications related to the urban census history and the implied original methodological solutions for using …
From Birth to Marriage
This article analyses sex ratios in late nineteenth – to early twentieth-century Russia focusing on the easternmost frontier of its European part – Perm Province with a population of about 3 million. High sex ratio at birth, in infancy, and childhood has been widely used to assess gender discriminatory practices in several countries, including some European ones. Russia is usually depicted as highly patriarchal with a low social status of women, …

The authors analyzed the methodological and terminological apparatus used in modern elite studies and formulated the concept of “social elite” based on synthesizing the civilizational aspects of elite theory and modernization theory. The social elite is understood as a minority that is a reference group for the r…
Before the First World War
The article focuses on the Yekaterinburg city (Urals, Russia) population on the eve of the First World War. We argue that 1897 Census data, which remains the main source for estimating the late Imperial Russias urban population, are not relevant for the early 20th century Yekaterinburg. The results of population surveys of 1917-1922 largely affected by the socio-political crisis do not reflect the actual development of the city before entering th…
