Relationship Between Race and Gestational Weight Gain in Pregnancy and Early Life in the South Birth-Cohort Study
Disparities in Healthcare Utilization
Inequities in pollution-attributable health disparities are similar in most urban areas throughout the United States, and appear to encompass racial and socio-demographic differences, thereby suggesting increased health risks for those living in these areas. Individuals residing in close proximity to Superfund sites, predominantly people of color, are increasingly stricken with lung diseases. The prevalence of chronic lung diseases, such as chron…
Factors Associated with Perceived Susceptibility to Covid-19 Among Urban and Rural Adults in Alabama
Intentional tanning behaviors among undergraduates on the United States’ Gulf Coast
In the largest study to date of intentional tanning behaviors of adolescents and young adults from coastal regions, we found high rates of intentional tanning behaviors. There was also significant engagement in spray tanning by this population, not previously reported for adolescents and young adults in a sample of this size. We also identified a high association between different tanning methods, indicating this population engages in multiple ta…
Bikeshare Use in Urban Communities
Higher neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with higher bikeshare use. Bikeshare is a viable transportation option in low-resource neighborhoods and may be an effective tool to improve the connectivity, livability, and health of urban communities
Examining Neighborhood Social Cohesion in the Context of Community-based Participatory Research
The Mid-South TCC Academic and Community Engagement (ACE) Core successfully partnered with community members and stakeholders to establish a coalition whose concerns and vision for the community matched the concerns of residents of the community. Collecting data from different groups strengthened the interpretation of the findings and allowed for a rich understanding of neighborhood concerns
Disparities in chronic medical conditions in the Mid-South
Disparities in CMCs are associated with income and disproportionately affect the black population. In the Mid-South, race and gender disparities in the top five chronic conditions are more prominent among higher-income rather than lower-income individuals
Rural‐Urban Disparities in Quality of Life Among Patients With COPD
PURPOSE: Limited evidence in the United States suggests that among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), rural residence is associated with higher hospitalization rates and increased mortality. However, little is known about the reasons for these disparities. This study's purpose was to describe the health status of rural versus urban residence among patients with COPD and to examine factors associated with differences betwe…
Sustainable Agricultural, Economic, and Social Development
The recent famine in the Horn of Africa has focused world attention on tens of thousands of young children dying of starvation with many more expected. This situation is tragic and calls for immediate and sustained response. Yet the current “crisis” is merely the “tip of the iceberg” of a long-standing tragedy of child under-nutrition in much of the developing world. The majority of child deaths in these regions have an underlying cause of under-…
Pulmonary impairment after tuberculosis and its contribution to TB burden
Our findings demonstrate that the disease burden from TB is greater than previously estimated. Pulmonary impairment after tuberculosis was responsible for the majority of the burden. These data demonstrate that successful TB control efforts may reduce the health burden more than previously recognized
Global Public Health, Development, and Sustainability
A scholarly article by authors Kristine Lykens, Sejong Bae, and Sardar Sharif, Karan P. Singh published in The International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic, and Social Sustainability: Annual Review
Factors for Accessing a Medical Home Vary Among CSHCN from Different Levels of Socioeconomic Status
Comparison of Health Behaviors Among Single- and Multiple-member Households
Socioeconomic Determinants of Planned Methadone Treatment
