Baluchi Experiences Under Slavery and the Slave Trade of the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, 1921–1950
Using 381 testimonies of Baluchi slaves recorded between 1921 and 1950, this article aims to locate these individuals within the context of the Indian Ocean world. The detailed information in these testimonies reveals various modes of enslavement, including marriage. This article claims that Baluchi slaves shared a common destiny with other groups of people and were far from being the marginal phenomenon that they are often assumed to have been

This chapter describes the story of a young Fula-speaking woman known as Saaba who was sold as a slave in the Algerian Sahara in 1877. 近年,奴隷交易廃絶活動に関する研究は一層の盛り上がりを見せ,研究対象が拡張され,また研究視座も多角化している。そのなかで,インド洋西海域に関する研究も増えている。しかし,現在の研究は,少なくともインド洋西海域に関する研究についていえば,奴隷交易を他の交易と切り離して議論を進めるのが一般的である。したがって,奴隷交易廃絶活動にかかわる研究も,その活動が奴隷交易以外に与える影響については,充分に考察してこなかった。本稿は,そうした動向を踏まえて,洋上での活動がいかなるもので,それがこの海域の海運にいかなる影響を与えたのかを考察した。考察の結果明らかになったのは,次の点である。1イギリス海軍が洋上での奴隷交易廃絶活動に参入する1860年代以降,洋上での活動の成果は飛躍した。2この飛躍の背景には,イギリス海軍の「奴隷船」拿捕に関する規定が大きく作用していた。3この規定によって,イギリス海軍の艦船は,奴隷を実際に救助しなくても,報奨金を得られ,それが成果の飛躍に繋がっていたのである。4しかしながら…
