This paper examines “face-work” in the context of a singles dance in order to inventory the array of techniques participants use to avert potentially damaging evaluations by others. Face-saving involves the dynamics of social rejection—a general phenomenon cutting across many aspects of social interaction. Mental Illness among the Chinese
This study examines trends in mental hospital commitments among the Chinese in California over the past one hundred years. There has been a two‐fold increase for the general population compared to a seven‐fold increase among the Chinese; while initially the Chinese had substantially lower rates of commitment, since the 1930s they have been roughly equal to the general population. Relationships between organizational goals and informal organization in three minimum-security prisons were examined in an attempt to replicate Grusky's study and to investigate relations between formal and informal structure in total institutions and conditions which generate oppositional informal organization.
