The Social Context of Science
Science remains an eminently social institution, though the interactions between science and society are often poorly understood. This article addresses the context of recent efforts to identify environmental contributions to cancer. Policy Issues in Environmental Health Disputes
This article compares the state of policies concerning three different diseases/conditions with putative environmental factors: asthma, breast cancer, and Gulf War-related illnesses. By comparing the state of four different types of policies--research funding, regulations, compensation/treatment, and citizen participation--the authors demonstrate the dynamic relationship between policies and health social movements. When Wives Get Sick
This article examines factors related to husbands' contribution to housework when their wives become newly impaired. Data are from a sample of 319 married couples who participated in the National Survey of Families and Households, and in which wives developed physical limitations between baseline and five-year follow-up interviews. Using ordinary least squares regression, we found that husbands who have egalitarian attitudes toward marital roles …

Much prior research in social psychology indicates that in many domains of social life, individuals' well-being improves in the latter half of the life course. The reason for this pattern is not well understood, however. We argue that objective changes in family composition and in social and economic conditions in middle and later life may explain the later-life increase in well-being. Effects of Parental Divorce and Memories of Family Problems on Relationships between Adult Children and their Parents
We examined adult child-parent relations by childhood family structure and memories of family problems. Relative to those who grew up in two-parent families, adult children of divorce perceive both relationships with mothers and fathers to be of lower quality, although the magnitude of effects is generally two or three times greater for fathers.
