The Elephant in the Room
During the Upper Paleolithic of southwestern France, the working of mammoth ivory is widely documented, but the use of mammoth bone has not been identified except for one possible Gravettian case. Here we report six worked objects made of mammoth bone from five sites in southwestern France, which have been identified taxonomically by proteomics using ZooMS. They were radiocarbon dated and their chronological distribution spans the Upper Paleolith…

New insights into the use and circulation of reindeer antler in northern Iberia during the Magdalenian (ca. 21-13 cal ka BP)
Interactions between prehistoric foragers and reindeer at the end of the Pleistocene are still poorly documented in northern Iberia, particularly the reasons and means by which their antlers were collected, processed and circulated. Here we review the main osseous industries dated to between 21 and 13 cal ka BP, focusing on the use and circulation of reindeer antler as a raw material for the production of weapons and tools by Magdalenian foragers…
Site 19 Trémery ZAC de la Fontaine-des-Saints, which lies 14 km north-east of Metz, was excavated in 1999. The site is located on a slope on the right bank of the river Moselle. The site produced several occupation phases, dating from the Early Neolithic to the Early Iron Age and a group of four Bell Beaker graves, one of which was discovered during trial trenching. The burials are located in an area of around 500 m2 on the western edge of the si…

Human Rights in Deleuze and Bergson’s Later Philosophy
Gilles Deleuze’s later thought revolves around the problem of immanence. Indeed, his final piece, “Immanence: a Life”, restates his definition of philosophy as thought faithful to immanence. But Deleuze’s commitment to immanence also informs his scathing criticism of human rights. His objection is that they introduce a transcendence of the subject that vitiates political thought and practice. In this article, I argue that while Deleuze’s objectio…
Kuntzig (Moselle).
Mary Wollstonecraft's civic perfectionism
Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) is a spirited defence of women's natural rights and a disparaging critique of a society that regards weakness in women as a virtue
Bergson on Durkheim
This paper contends that Henri Bergson's The Two Sources of Morality and Religion (1977 [1932]) is in pervasive and critical engagement with Émile Durkheim. We argue that both thinkers advance a sui generis concept of society that frames the organizing problem of their exchange: the relationship between society and biology. Our analysis traces the concept of society sui generis through Durkheim's Division of Labor (1893) and Rules of Sociological…

The Gift of Law
Modern social and political thought has approached the questions of politics, law, and citizenship from the vantage point of a fundamental divide between the occidental and oriental, or archaic and modern, institutions. This article creates a concept, the gift of law, by staging two gift-giving practices as two historical moments: Greek euergetism and Ottoman waqf. While it is indebted to Mauss, our articulation of the gift of law also owes to th…
