Technological variability and raw material procurement in the Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the lithic assemblage from Level G1 of El Cierro Cave (northern Spain), attributed to the Cantabrian Lower Magdalenian. The study comprises 2,829 items, including 2,800 knapped artefacts, six macrolithic tools and 23 unmodified pebbles. Lithic procurement is dominated by flint, followed by quartzite and minor amounts of quartz. Eleven flint types have been identified, with local raw materials prevai…
Mining activities in the eastern Sierra Morena (Jaén, Iberian Peninsula) during recent Prehistory
During the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC, complex socio-political changes took place within the communities inhabiting the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula. In these dynamic processes, metallurgy constituted one of the most critical economic aspects in the emergence of institutional power and the development of ruling classes. The metallic sources of different kinds existing in the region of study, the eastern part of Sierra Morena (comprising t…
Beyond 2,000 meters, first evidence of intense prehistoric occupation in the Pyrenees
Cave 338 is a high-altitude prehistoric site located at 2,235 m a. s.l. in the eastern Pyrenees (Queralbs, Girona, NE Iberian Peninsula). Excavated between 2021 and 2023, the site preserves an exceptional and well-stratified archaeological sequence documenting recurrent episodes of human occupation spanning from at least the early 5th millennium cal BC to the late 1st millennium cal BC. Radiocarbon dates indicate that these occupations occurred d…
Ancient Evidence of Plant Processing in Human Communities at the End of the European Pleistocene
The Strength of Diversity
Any approach to the economic organization of a society depends on our knowledge of the productive forces and relations of production involved. In archaeology, this line of research requires an analysis of the technical quality and quantity of the means of production, as well as their spatial distribution and contextualisation. Macrolithic artefacts constituted the means of production in many of the productive processes of past communities, from t…
Surface roughness as a quantitative approach to use-wear on macrolithic tools
Use-wear analysis has been a well-established aspect of the study of artefact biography for decades, and it has recently developed along two different, though complementary methodological paths. While the classical or qualitative approach still relies largely on the experience gained from the combination of experimental tests, tribological principles and visual observation, new attempts try to define quantitative surface signatures. Surface topog…
First evidence for the forging of gold in an Early Bronze Age Site of Central Europe (2200–1800 BCE)
Evidence of gold processing in the fortified site of Bruszczewo (Poland) is the first testimony of the production of gold artefacts in a domestic Early Bronze Age site of Central Europe. This paper highlights the potential of macrolithic tool ensembles as a key element for the recognition of metallurgical work processes. Moreover, it presents an optimised methodological approach to tackle the application of stone tools in metallurgical production…
Holocene resource exploitation along the Nile
The subsistence practices of Holocene communities living in the Nile Valley of Central Sudan are comparatively little known. Recent excavations at Khor Shambat, Sudan, have yielded well-defined Mesolithic and Neolithic stratigraphy. Here, for the first time, archaeozoological, palaeobotanical, phytolith and dental calculus studies are combined with lipid residue analysis of around 100 pottery fragments and comparative analysis of faunal remains a…
Manufacture, use and management of macro-lithic resources in the Bronze Age settlement of Bruszczewo (Poland)
Contrary to pottery or metal artefacts, macro-lithic tools are still not fully integrated into the archaeological research programs concerning the Early Bronze Age of Central Europe. While such kind of archaeological materials usually do not easily allow typological approaches, their constant participation in several productive spheres makes them a crucial element for understanding the economic processes and the organisation of past societies. Th…

Bronze Age cereal processing in Southern Iberia
During the last two decades important progress has been made regarding functional analysis on prehistoric grinding equipment, thanks to the application of new methods and techniques. Despite these efforts studies integrating archaeology, ethnography, geology and other disciplines related to the material sciences are still rare. The main focus of this paper is placed on the grinding equipment composed of two elements, grinding slab and rubber, act…
The Silversmith's Workshop of Tira Del Lienzo (Totana, Murcia) In The Context of Iberian Bronze Age Metallurgy
The south‐east of the Iberian Peninsula saw deep social and political changes at the dawn of the second millennium bce . The emergence of important economic asymmetries inside communities was apparently based to a large extent on control of the secondary metallurgical production process; namely, forging. In this sense, the recently excavated architectural complex at the Argaric site of Tira del Lienzo constitutes an exceptional finding. At this s…
