  • The allusive comedy of Kingsley Amis’ L.S. Caton

    James S Taylor•ARTICLE•Comedy Studies•2024•Referências: 4

One of the most fascinating comic characters in British fiction is L.S. Caton, the scheming academic who first appeared in Kingsley Amis' satire Lucky Jim. Based on Amis' first publisher, R. A. Caton, the evasive and deceitful L.S. Caton became a running joke in Amis' early novels; other writers then joined the joke by similarly alluding to him. Since Caton's appearances subsequent to Lucky Jim allude both to his initial appearance and to his sub…

  • Promises to the Dead

    Open Access•James S Taylor•ARTICLE•Royal Institute of Philosophy…•2021

Many people attempt to give meaning to their lives by pursuing projects that they believe will bear fruit after they have died. Knowing that their death will preclude them from protecting or promoting such projects people who draw meaning from them will often attempt to secure their continuance by securing promises from others to serve as their caretakers after they die. But those who rely on such are faced with a problem: None of the four major …

  • The Carelessness of Affordable Care

    Open Access•James S Taylor•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•2012

The Affordable Care Act has been touted as a long‐overdue remedy for what is perceived to be the chronic problem of large numbers of Americans living without adequate health insurance. While much of the discussion of the ACA has focused on its legality, it should also be assessed on the basis of its economic implications and its moral acceptability. On its face, the ACA appears to do well on both counts. Given that the uninsured often secure thei…

  • Corpses do not have rights

    James S Taylor, Aaron Spital•ARTICLE•Mortality•2008

John Sutton Baglow has recently argued that corpses “have limited human rights.” Baglow believes that socially imposed obligations generate rights, and so because people are socially obliged to treat corpses with respect, corpses have the right to be so treated. Against this claim we note that obligations are generally derived from rights but may not always generate them. Yet even if any obligations we may have regarding the treatment of corpses …

  • Liberalism, the Duty to Rescue, and Organ Procurement

    Open Access•James S Taylor•ARTICLE•Political Studies Review•2008

After outlining her rights-based theory of justice in Whose Body is it Anyway? Cécile Fabre argues that as a matter of justice needy people have a right to be rescued provided that this would not impose unreasonable costs upon their would-be rescuers, and that this right should be enshrined in law. Fabre then argues that the enforcement of such a duty to rescue extends not only to the state being able to conscript persons into a civilian service,…

Marvin R Brams, James Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•1983

Many municipalities own and operate the electric companies which service their population, or act as distributors of electricity which they purchase from privately owned electric companies. Municipalities will often sell electricity at a substantial profit which is credited to their General Fund and becomes a substitute for properly taxes. A case study of a Delaware municipality that follows this practice was examined to determine the impact of t…
