  • Structural Violence and Physical Death at Tlatelolco

Open Access•Kelly Elaine Blevins, Kelly Blevins et al.•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2022

Human sacrifice in Mesoamerican cities was diverse and highly ritualized, and it remains incompletely understood. Knowing who was selected for ritual violence is essential for interpreting specialized mortuary deposits and furthering research on Mexica society. To understand the structure and variability of sacrificial and mortuary practices, we examine here three burial contexts from Tlatelolco, a densely populated city in the heart of the Tripl…

  • Ancient mitochondrial DNA provides high-resolution time scale of the peopling of the Americas

    Open Access•Bastien Llamas, Lars Fehren-Schmitz et al.•ARTICLE•Science Advances•2016

Native American population history is reexamined using a large data set of pre-Columbian mitochondrial genomes.

  • Savoury Recipes and the Colour of the Tlatelcomila Human Bones

    Open Access•A Trujillo‐Mederos, Aioze Trujillo Mederos et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 37

Bones from Tlatelcomila (Tetelpan, México D.F.) were characterized by several complementary physical and chemical techniques, such as X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, energy‐dispersive spectroscopy and ultraviolet spectroscopy, to determine whether they were boiled or grilled. The usual correlation between thermal treatment and colour is revisited in terms of microscopic s…

  • Genomic evidence for the Pleistocene and recent population history of Native Americans

Open Access•Maanasa Raghavan, Matthias Steinrücken et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2015

Genetic history of Native Americans Several theories have been put forth as to the origin and timing of when Native American ancestors entered the Americas. To clarify this controversy, Raghavan et al. examined the genomic variation among ancient and modern individuals from Asia and the Americas. There is no evidence for multiple waves of entry or recurrent gene flow with Asians in northern populations. The earliest migrations occurred no earlier…

Open Access•Alfonso Ávila, Josefina Mansilla et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2014•Citada por: 22

  • On yellow and red pigmented bones found in Mayan burials of Jaina

Open Access•Erasmo Batta, Carlos Argáez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2012•Citada por: 8•Referências: 4

  • The origin of black pigmentation in a sample of Mexican prehispanic human bones

  • Archaeological and Contemporary Human Hair Composition and Morphology

Open Access•Josefina Mansilla, Josefina Mansilla Lory et al.•ARTICLE•Chungara•2011

Contemporary and mummy hair samples are characterized and compared, using modern chemical and physical characterization methods. It is found that in cave conditions mummy hair can be preserved even if it interacts with environmental dirt or soil, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy results. Hair is an ion exchanger and the exposure to earth and water can facilitate the interaction of some elements with hair as shown by X-ray fluorescence,…

  • Thermal Alterations in Archaeological Bones

    Open Access•Carmen Pijoan, C MA PIJOAN et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2007•Citada por: 32•Referências: 31

Archaeological bones, found close to Mexico City (Tlatelcomila), with alterations due to probable thermal exposure attributed to a possible case of cannibalism, have been characterized by XRD, SAXS and SEM. It is shown how these non‐destructive techniques, which are not conventionally used in archaeological research, may provide useful information. The deterioration degree of the bone structure is quantified through parameters such as gyration ra…

  • La Cueva De La Candelaria

Open Access•Carmen Ma Pijoan Aguadé, Josefina Mansilla Lory•ARTICLE•Chungara•2000

  • A case of congenital syphilis during the colonial period in Mexico City

Open Access•Josefina Mansilla, Josefina Mansilla Lory et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1995•Citada por: 6•Referências: 11

Congenital syphilis has been diagnosed very seldom in ancient populations. The case that we examined comes from San Jeronimo's Church (17th and 18th centuries AD; Mexico City). Coffin 43 contained an incomplete skeleton of an approximately 2‐year‐old infant. The pathological lesions of this skeleton include bilateral osteochondritis, diaphyseal osteomyelitis, and osteitis and/or periostitis on the long bones. The radiographic appearance depicts s…
