Differential responses of Asian summer monsoon circulation and local hydroclimate during the Holocene
The Restricted Reallocation Effect of Export Under Frictional Labour Market
Labour market frictions impede the resource reallocation process induced by trade liberalization, thereby affecting firms' performance in the labour market. Taking frictional labour market as an assumption, this paper investigates the impact of exogenous export shocks on firm‐level labour constraints. We show that the positive export shock tends to tighten labour constraints overall for exporting firms and this effect is more stringent for firms …

East Asian summer monsoon climates and cave hydrological cycles over Dansgaard-Oeschger events 14 to 11 revealed by a new stalagmite record from Hulu Cave
A 230 Th/U-dated stalagmite from Hulu Cave was analyzed for δ 18 O, δ 13 C, and trace elements. A ~10-yr-resolution δ 18 O record, spanning 51.7–42.6 ka, revealed Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events 14 to 11. A similar rapid transition and synchronous timing of the onset of DO 12 is evident between the Greenland and Hulu Cave records, which suggests a common forcing mechanism of DO cycles in the North Atlantic and monsoonal region of Asia. Centennial-…
Millennial-scale Asian monsoon variability during the late Marine Isotope Stage 6 from Hulu Cave, China
A precisely 230 Th-dated stalagmite δ 13 C profile from Hulu Cave, China, is presented to characterize the frequency and pattern of millennial-scale Asian monsoon (AM) variability from 160.6 to 132.5 ka. Evidence for an antiphased relationship of the δ 13 C and δ 18 O on the millennial scale suggests that the δ 13 C is indicative of the local hydrological cycle associated with changes in AM strength. Owing to the δ 13 C responding to AM changes m…
Remote vs. local control on the Preboreal Asian hydroclimate and soil processes recorded by an annually-laminated stalagmite from Daoguan Cave, southern China
Strong coupling of centennial-scale changes of Asian monsoon and soil processes derived from stalagmite δ 18 O and δ 13 C records, southern China
The paleoclimate application of speleothem δ 13 C is influenced by site-specific processes. Here we present four stalagmite δ 13 C records from two caves in southern China, covering early and late Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 and the Holocene, to investigate the spatio-temporal pattern of calcite δ 13 C changes and the relationship with Asian monsoon (AM) variability. In each growth period, precessional- to millennial-scale changes are clear in t…
Multi-scale Holocene Asian monsoon variability deduced from a twin-stalagmite record in southwestern China
We present two isotopic (δ 18 O and δ 13 C) sequences of a twin-stalagmite from Zhuliuping Cave, southwestern China, with 230 Th dates from 14.6 to 4.6 ka. The stalagmite δ 18 O record characterizes orbital- to decadal-scale variability of Asian summer monsoon (ASM) intensity, with the Holocene optimum period (HOP) between 9.8 and 6.8 ka BP which is reinforced by its co-varying δ 13 C data. The large multi-decadal scale amplitude of the cave δ 18…
The Asian monsoon over the past 640,000 years and ice age terminations
A 3000-yr Annually Laminated Stalagmite Record of the Last Glacial Maximum from Hulu Cave, China
A high-resolution, annual layer-counted and 230 Th-dated multi-proxy record is constructed from a stalagmite in Hulu Cave, China. These proxies, including δ 18 O, annual layer thickness (ALT), gray level (GL) and Sr/Ca, cover a time span of ~ 3000 yr from 21 to 24 ka. The physical proxies (ALT and GL) and the geochemical index (Sr/Ca), all primarily reflecting karst hydrological processes, vary in concert and their coherence is supported by wavel…
A detailed East Asian monsoon history surrounding the ‘Mystery Interval’ derived from three Chinese speleothem records
The ‘Mystery Interval’ (MI, 17.5−14.5 ka) was the first stage of the last deglaciation, a key interval for understanding mechanisms of glacial–interglacial cycles. To elucidate possible causes of the MI, here we present three high-resolution, precisely dated oxygen-isotope records of stalagmites from Qingtian and Hulu Caves in China, reflecting changes in the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) then. Based on well-established chronologies using prec…
Centennial-scale Asian Monsoon variability during the mid-Younger Dryas from Qingtian Cave, central China
The regional climate correlation within the Northern Hemisphere in the cold/dry mid-Younger Dryas event (YD) remains elusive. A key to unraveling this issue is sufficient knowledge of the detailed climate variability at the low latitudes. Here we present a high-resolution (3-yr) δ 18 O record of an annually laminated stalagmite from central China that reveals a detailed Asian monsoon (AM) history from 13.36 to 10.99 ka. The YD in this record is e…

Radiocarbon Calibration/Comparison Records Based on Marine Sediments from the Pakistan and Iberian Margins
We present a new record of radiocarbon ages measured by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) on a deep-sea core collected off the Pakistan Margin. The 14 C ages measured on the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber from core MD04-2876 define a high and stable sedimentation rate on the order of 50 cm/kyr over the last 50 kyr. The site is distant from the main upwelling zone of the western Arabian Sea where 14 C reservoir age is large and ma…
Textural and carbon isotopic evidence of monsoonal changes recorded in a composite-type speleothem from Korea since MIS 5a
Textural and stable isotopic records of a composite-type speleothem from Gwaneum Cave in the eastern part of the Korean peninsula show prominent paleoenvironmental changes since MIS (marine oxygen isotope stage) 5a. Based on 230 Th/ 234 U dating, the speleothem experienced growth from 90.9 ± 6.5 ka to 1.2 ± 0.5 ka with several hiatuses. Four growth phases (A, B, C and D) are recognized based on speleothem type and texture. Very irregular and late…
A high-resolution stalagmite record of the Holocene East Asian monsoon from Mt Shennongjia, central China
High-resolution oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) profiles of six stalagmites from Sanbao Cave in Hubei province, central China, established with 1413 oxygen isotope data and 65 230 Th ages, provide a continuous history of East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) intensity for the period from 13—0.2 thousand years before present (ky BP, relative to AD 1950). The δ 18 O record includes four distinct stages in the evolution of the EASM: (1) an abrupt transition (~11…
A Test of Climate, Sun, and Culture Relationships from an 1810-Year Chinese Cave Record
A record from Wanxiang Cave, China, characterizes Asian Monsoon (AM) history over the past 1810 years. The summer monsoon correlates with solar variability, Northern Hemisphere and Chinese temperature, Alpine glacial retreat, and Chinese cultural changes. It was generally strong during Europe's Medieval Warm Period and weak during Europe's Little Ice Age, as well as during the final decades of the Tang, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties, all times that we…

The Holocene Asian Monsoon
A 5-year-resolution absolute-dated oxygen isotope record from Dongge Cave, southern China, provides a continuous history of the Asian monsoon over the past 9000 years. Although the record broadly follows summer insolation, it is punctuated by eight weak monsoon events lasting ∼1 to 5 centuries. One correlates with the “8200-year” event, another with the collapse of the Chinese Neolithic culture, and most with North Atlantic ice-rafting events. Cr…

Use of Rubidium to Date Loess and Paleosols of the Louchan Sequence, Central China
Rb concentrations, analyzed at 20-cm intervals from the Luochuan sequence of loess and paleosols, are sensitive to the loess–paleosol alternation controlled by monsoon climate. Because it is geochemically immobile, Rb can be well preserved in the loess–paleosol sequence after deposition, and its concentration depends mainly on properties of the winter monsoon-blown dust and on intensity of the summer monsoon-induced pedogenesis. A curvilinear rel…

Timing, Duration, and Transitions of the Last Interglacial Asian Monsoon
Thorium-230 ages and oxygen isotope ratios of stalagmites from Dongge Cave, China, characterize the Asian Monsoon and low-latitude precipitation over the past 160,000 years. Numerous abrupt changes in 18 O/ 16 O values result from changes in tropical and subtropical precipitation driven by insolation and millennial-scale circulation shifts. The Last Interglacial Monsoon lasted 9.7 ± 1.1 thousand years, beginning with an abrupt (less than 200 year…
