  • A global view of eco-social policy support

Open Access•Felix Schulz, Christian Bretter et al.•ARTICLE•Global Sustainability•2026

Non-Technical Summary Societies are failing to meet basic human needs while simultaneously respecting ecological limits. This article examines the political feasibility of three of the most commonly discussed eco-social policies which aim to align social objectives with planetary boundaries. We use large-scale representative survey data from six countries. Support for all policies is higher in three middle-income countries with a higher number of…

  • Just transitions in global economies? Union and worker understandings of justice in Germany and South Africa compared

Open Access•Vera Trappmann, Ruth Bookbinder et al.•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2026

This article draws on fieldwork in Germany and South Africa, including interviews with unionists, environmental activists, and policy-makers, to compare experiences and perspectives of workers and communities affected by climate policies and the transition to industrial decarbonisation. There is broad support for a just transition in Germany, with workers and their unions actively promoting climate action – though the notion of ‘just transition’ …

  • Perspectives on Social and Justice Issues in Climate Policy – Comparing the Just Transitions, Sustainable Welfare and Eco‐Social Policy Literatures

Open Access•Milena Büchs, Vera Trappmann et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2026•Referências: 46

Given that the climate emergency is accelerating, transformative climate action becomes increasingly urgent. Considering social and fairness implications of climate action is critical to avoid widening inequalities and public opposition. The just transitions (JT) and sustainable welfare/eco‐social policy (SW/ESP) literatures both address social and fairness issues related to climate action. However, they have developed largely separately from eac…

  • German Trade Unions and Decarbonisation

Open Access•Vera Trappmann, Dennis Eversberg et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial Relations Journal•2025

While the need for a transformation to tackle climate change is no longer contested, competing visions about the future have taken the front seat in political debates. Previous research on stakeholders in the European Parliament and the German Bundestag identified opposing views relating to green growth, degrowth and post‐growth. In relation to trade unions, these have recently been discussed conceptually to some extent, but empirical work on the…

  • Becoming a young radical right activist

    Open Access•Janina Myrczik, Justyna Kajta et al.•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2025•Referências: 39

With the increasing popularity of the radical right, much research has tried to explain the motives of voters. Less attention has been paid to the motives of people to become radical right activists - specifically young people, a group with a high tendency to join right-wing parties. Within the context of the internationalisation of the radical right, this article draws on 28 narrative interviews conducted between 2019 and 2021 with young radical…

  • Platform Labour Unrest in a Global Perspective

Open Access•Charles Umney, Mark Stuart et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2024•Citada por: 17•Referências: 38

Labour unrest by platform workers is a growing global phenomenon, but several questions require deeper understanding. What motivates platform labour unrest? Which actors and strategies are involved? How does this vary across regions? Systematic answers are hindered by the lack of large datasets. Uniquely, this article analyses a global dataset comprising 1271 instances of platform labour unrest. It reveals two main dimensions of platform labour s…

  • How Do Young Workers Perceive Job Insecurity? Legitimising Frames for Precarious Work in England and Germany

Open Access•Vera Trappmann, Charles Umney et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2024•Citada por: 13•Referências: 57

This article examines the legitimising frames young workers in England and Germany apply to precarious work. Through 63 qualitative biographical interviews, the article shows that most young precarious workers saw work insecurity as an unavoidable fact of life whose legitimacy could not realistically be challenged. Four frames are identified that led to precarious work being seen as legitimate: precarious work as a driver of entrepreneurialism; a…

  • A global analysis of worker protest in digital labour platforms

Open Access•Ioulia Bessa, Simon Joyce et al.•BOOK•A global analysis of worker…•2022

This paper presents findings from the Leeds Index of Platform Labour Protest, a database of platform worker protest events around the world which gathers data from online news media reports and other online sources. For the period January 2017 to July 2020, we identified 1,271 instances of worker protest in four platform sectors: ride-hailing, food delivery, courier services and grocery delivery. Our results show that the single most important ca…

  • Precarity as a Biographical Problem? Young Workers Living with Precarity in Germany and Poland

    Open Access•Adam Mrozowicki, Vera Trappmann•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2021•Citada por: 22•Referências: 30

In the context of debates on the meanings of precarious employment, this article explores the varied ways young workers in Poland and Germany are managing precarity. Biographical narrative interviews with 123 young people revealed four different ways interviewees experienced precarity. These different approaches reflected varied ways in which interviewees were orientated to work, the meanings attributed by them to precarious employment and the ma…

  • The Moral Boundary Drawing of Class

Open Access•Vera Trappmann, Alexandra Seehaus et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2021•Citada por: 2•Referências: 27

This article explores the relational and moral aspects of the perception of class structure and class identifications by young people in objectively vulnerable labour market conditions in Poland and Germany. Drawing on 123 biographical interviews with young people in both countries, it demonstrates that young precarious Poles and Germans tend to identify themselves against the 'middle class' - understood variously in the two countries - and attri…

    Open Access•Adam Mrozowicki, Vera Trappmann et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Sociology Review•2019•Citada por: 4•Referências: 7

This article explores the selected cases of the biographies of right-wing supporters from a larger sample of narrative interviews with young (18-35 years old) people in Poland and Germany. In the existing literature, we can find the socio-economic explanations of the sources of the right-wing turn (related to economic deprivation, precarisation, social exclusion, labor market competition with immigrants and others), as well as cultural explanatio…

  • In, Against and Beyond Precarity

Open Access•Giorgio Alberti, Gabriella Alberti et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2018•Citada por: 124•Referências: 27

In this Foreword to the special issue 'In, Against and Beyond Precarity' the guest editors take stock of the existing literature on precarity, highlighting the strengths and limitations of using this concept as an analytical tool for examining the world of work. Concluding that the overstretched nature of concept has diluted its political effectiveness, the editors suggest instead a focus on precarization as a process, drawing from perspectives t…

  • Between consolidation and crisis

Open Access•Guglielmo Meardi, Vera Trappmann•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2013

This article describes the evolution of social dialogue and collective bargaining in Poland between 2008 and 2012, arguing that the effects of the crisis have been asymmetrical in two ways. First, while Poland is the only EU country to have avoided recession in macroeconomic terms, the crisis has actually disproportionately affected labour through higher unemployment and worsening employment conditions. Secondly, in a decentralized system like th…
