  • Using Smartphone Technology for Research on Refugees

    Open Access•Florian Keusch, Mariel McKone Leonard et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2021•Citada por: 3•Referências: 27

Researchers attempting to survey refugees over time face methodological issues because of the transient nature of the target population. In this article, we examine whether applying smartphone technology could alleviate these issues. We interviewed 529 refugees and afterward invited them to four follow-up mobile web surveys and to install a research app for passive mobile data collection. • How marriages based on bride capture differ

    Open Access•Susan Steiner, C Becker et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 11

A significant proportion of women in the Kyrgyz Republic marry via ala kachuu, generally translated as bride capture or kidnapping. Many regard this practice as harmless elopement or a tradition; others perceive it as a form of forced marriage

  • Patrilocal Residence and Female Labor Supply

Open Access•Andreas Landmann, Helke Seitz et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2018•Citada por: 4•Referências: 26

Many people live in patrilocal societies, which prescribe that women move in with their husbands’ parents, relieve their in-laws from housework, and care for them in old age. This arrangement is likely to have labor market consequences, in particular for women. We study the effect of coresidence on female labor supply in Kyrgyzstan, a strongly patrilocal setting. We account for the endogeneity of coresidence by exploiting the tradition that young…

  • Forced Marriage and Birth Outcomes

    Open Access•C Becker, Charles M Becker et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 29

We study the impact of marriages resulting from bride kidnapping on infant birth weight. Bride kidnapping—a form of forced marriage—implies that women are abducted by men and have little choice other than to marry their kidnappers. Given this lack of choice over the spouse, we expect adverse consequences for women in such marriages. Remarkable survey data from the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan enable exploration of differential birth outcome…

  • How Important is the Capacity of Local Governments for Improvements in Welfare? Evidence from Decentralised Uganda

Susan Steiner•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2010

Decentralisation is often claimed to be effective for improvements in welfare and hence the reduction of poverty but empirical evidence is scarce. This paper seeks to gain further insights into the relationship between decentralisation and welfare by investigating the role of local governments' capacity for household consumption and school enrolment in Uganda. Using household survey data, it finds suggestive evidence that both household consumpti…
