Educational Disparities in Disability in Mid- to Late-Life
BackgroundEducational disparities in disability are substantial, but the contribution of pain remains underexplored.Research DesignUsing 2002-2018 National Health Interview Survey data, we examined the role of site-specific pain-joint, low back, neck, headache/migraine, and facial/jaw-in educational disparities in physical, cognitive, work, and social limitations, as well as activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental ADLs (IADLs). Marital Status and Deaths from Alcohol, Drug Overdose, and Suicide in the United States
This article is the first to explore variations in alcohol, drug overdose, and suicide deaths in the United States by marital status before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. Using the Multiple Cause-of-Death file and the American Community Survey (2000–2021), we found the nonmarried exhibit mortality rates 2 to 3 times higher in alcohol and suicide deaths and 4 to 5 times higher in drug-related deaths compared to the married population…
Does Pain Explain Trends in Disability? An Analysis of Middle-Aged and Older U.S. Adults, 2002–2018
Our research provides the first systematic, national examination of how pain is contributing to disability trends in the United States. The findings have implications for disability reduction policies and shed light on the far-reaching consequences of pain for overall population health
Stressful life events and subjectively rated sleep quality among older adults in China
Sleep is an integral part of individuals' health and wellbeing. Despite evidence showing that social stressors are important contributors to older adults' sleep problems, how the accumulative stressful life events (SLEs) and ageing attitudes independently and jointly affect sleep quality among older adults in developing countries remains unclear. This study examined the effects of SLEs on subjectively rated sleep quality among older adults in Chi…
Negative Life Events, Social Ties, and Depressive Symptoms for Older Adults in China
Although it is widely acknowledged that older adults who have gone through negative life events are more likely to develop depression, there is limited evidence on whether and which type of social ties moderate this perceived relationship. Based on 2016 and 2018 waves of Chinese Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (4,466 individuals, 8,932 observations), we apply linear fixed effects models and confirm that negative life events are associated with d…
Work-Family Policies and Gender Inequalities in Childcare Time
Work-family policies are promoted to reduce gender inequalities in childcare time. However, the association between work-family policies and childcare time is complicated by the conditions of the policies and how mothers and fathers perform childcare. The authors examine whether three widely discussed work-family policies—paid parental leave, flextime, and flexplace—are associated with reduced gender differences in two dimensions of childcare tim…
The mixed blessing of living together or close by
BACKGROUND: Geographic proximity between parents and children is increasingly recognized as an alternative measure to coresidence as a gauge for intergenerational support in China. The quality of intergenerational relationships is another important dimension of intergenerational ties that is often underexplored. OBJECTIVE: We examine the association between parent-child proximity and life satisfaction of older adults and how it interacts with the…
