Using Group Level Assessment in community-engaged projects
Group level assessment (GLA) is a participatory qualitative method that includes participants in several research steps. As participatory methods gain popularity, validity considerations may be helpful in selecting appropriate methods that address project goals. This article explores the participatory research validity of GLA to understand the benefits and challenges of this method. Participatory research validity includes participatory, intersub…
An interdisciplinary framework of youth participatory action research informed by curricula, youth, adults, and researchers
Rarely are youth voices incorporated into program and policy development. Youth participatory action research (YPAR) is an opportunity for adolescents to develop research skills by completing projects relevant to their lives and allows participation and decision-making at systems and organizational levels. Attention to YPAR implementation detail, especially a curricular focus, is lacking in the literature. Specifically absent is an all-encompassi…
Psychological, Socio-Demographic, and Logistical Factors Associated With Changes in Sex Life After Over a Year Into the Covid-19 Pandemic
This study examined changes in sex life about a year into the COVID-19 pandemic for both partnered and non-partnered individuals and identified the determinants of these changes. The results of an online survey (N = 675) reflect a significant decrease in the frequency of intimate and sexual behaviors and declines in sexual desire, quality, intimacy, diversity, and satisfaction. This study also showed that socio-demographic characteristics, psycho…
Positionality, intersectionality, power dynamics in community participatory research to define public safety in Black communities
Community‐based participatory research (CBPR) is necessary for shifting knowledge and empowering community members to establish ownership over research. It was used in this current project to study safety in predominately Black communities. Findings illustrate how the embodiment of power was a present theme and impacted the partnerships among the academics and community, as well as defining “who” could speak on the issues the project was attempti…
Stress Coping Strategies as Mediators
Transitional aged youth (18-24) report increasing and peaking risk-taking (sexual, substance, and delinquent behavior). Stressful life events (SLE) are associated with these risk-taking behaviors. Little is known regarding what mediates these relationships. This study tests whether various coping strategies mediate the relationship between SLE and risky behavior in three domains among 18-24 year olds (N=126; M age = 21.3, SD = 1.9; 52% Black; 56%…
A Pilot Study to Evaluate the Impact of the HIV Infant Tracking System (Hitsystem 2.0) on Priority Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) Outcomes
A Checklist to Assess Childbearing Intentions and Promote Referral to Preconception Care or Contraception
An observational study of children’s behaviors across two playgrounds
National Needs of Family Planning Among US Men Aged 15 to 44 Years
Objectives. To estimate national need for family planning services among men in the United States according to background characteristics, access to care, receipt of services, and contraception use. Methods. We used weighted data from the 2006–2010 National Survey of Family Growth to estimate the percentage of men aged 15 to 44 years (n = 10 395) in need of family planning, based on sexual behavior, fecundity, and not trying to get pregnant with …
Men Aged 15–44 in Need of Preconception Care
Engaging HIV Care Providers in Conversations With Their Reproductive-Age Patients About Fertility Desires and Intentions
Provider-initiated conversations with people living with HIV about reproductive plans are lacking. Providers must know whether their patients want to bear children to tailor treatment and refer for HIV preconception counseling to help achieve patients’ reproductive goals while minimizing transmission to partners and children. The early focus on men who have sex with men largely excluded consideration of the epidemic’s impact on reproductive healt…
Implementing mindfulness and yoga in urban schools
Purpose – Mindfulness-based interventions – which train capacities for attention, awareness, compassion, and self-regulation of thoughts and emotions – may offer unique benefits for urban youth exposed to chronic stress and adversity. Urban schools are promising settings in which to integrate mindfulness-based interventions; however, they pose complex challenges for intervention implementation and evaluation. Design/methodology/approach – The pap…
Psychosocial Strengths and Needs of Low‐income Substance Abusers in Recovery
Psychosocial heterogeneity among recovering substance users is not well understood. Cluster analysis was used to identify subgroups with distinct psychosocial profiles among a low‐income sample attending a community recovery center ( n = 151). Psychosocial characteristics assessed included depressive symptoms, perceived social support, self‐efficacy, and coping. A 3‐cluster solution explained the most variance in the constructs assessed (R 2 = 0.…
Childbearing motivations, pregnancy desires, and perceived partner response to a pregnancy among urban female youth
Despite a growing literature assessing pregnancy desires among HIV-infected women enrolled in clinical care, little attention has been paid to HIV-infected youth for whom pregnancy is a very relevant issue. In urban areas with high rates of teen pregnancy and HIV infection, further understanding of childbearing motivations and relationship dynamics influencing pregnancy desires among female youth is needed. This study compares the childbearing mo…
A School‐based Mindfulness Intervention for Urban Youth
This study examines gender, grade‐level, and baseline depressive symptoms as potential moderators of a school‐based mindfulness intervention's impact on the self‐regulatory outcomes of urban youth. Ninety‐seven participants from four urban public schools were randomly assigned to an intervention or wait‐list control condition. Fourth and fifth graders in the intervention condition received a 12‐week yoga‐inspired mindfulness program. Using method…
Discussing Childbearing with HIV-infected Women of Reproductive Age in Clinical Care
Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Sexual Risk Behaviors And STDs During Young Men’s Transition to Adulthood
Race and ethnicity continue to differentiate young black and Latino men from their white peers in terms of STDs. Prevention programs that target different racial and ethnic subgroups of adolescent men and address both individual- and contextual-level factors are needed to curb STD incidence
Pathways of Early Fatherhood, Marriage, and Employment
In the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79), young fathers include heterogeneous subgroups with varying early life pathways in terms of fatherhood timing, the timing of first marriage, and holding full-time employment. Using latent class growth analysis with 10 observations between ages 18 and 37, we derived five latent classes with median ages of first fatherhood below the cohort median (26.4), constituting distinct early fatherho…
Feasibility and Preliminary Outcomes of a School-Based Mindfulness Intervention for Urban Youth
Understanding High Fertility Desires and Intentions Among a Sample of Urban Women Living with HIV in the United States
Changes in Sexual Risk Behavior as Young Men Transition to Adulthood
The prominence of low-risk behaviors over time suggests that most young men avoid sexual risk-taking. Effective strategies to reduce HIV and STD risk in young men must simultaneously address multiple dimensions of sexual behavior
How do implementation efforts relate to program adherence? examining the role of organizational, implementer, and program factors
Widespread replications of evidence‐based prevention programs (EBPPs) prompt prevention scientists to examine program implementation adherence in real world settings. Based on Chen's model (1990), we identified five key factors of the implementation system and assessed which characteristics related to program adherence. The sample included 32 EBPPs and results indicate that target recipient responsivity, program material quality, implementer prio…
