  • Estimating program coverage in the treatment of acute malnutrition using population-based cluster survey methods

Open Access•Grace Heymsfield, Elizabeth Radin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background Despite their utility for program planning, acute malnutrition treatment coverage estimates at the national and sub-national levels are rarely available. Prior work has identified methodological concerns with current approaches. Methods We estimated the point prevalence and treatment coverage of acute malnutrition in 11 districts (or similar subnational areas) across four high-burden countries in Africa using representative cluster-bas…

  • Precision and Sample Sizes Achieved for Infant and Young Child Feeding Indicators Evaluated in Anthropometry Assessments

Open Access•Eva Leidman, Behzad Kianian et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2025

This study characterizes the sample size and precision for infant and young child feeding (IYCF) indicators evaluated in surveys conducted in refugee settings, characterized by sample sizes enabling timely information to inform humanitarian response. We analyzed surveys provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees conducted from 2013 to 2019. For eight IYCF indicators recommended in the current global guidance, we assessed achiev…

  • Infant and young child feeding practices among conflict‐affected Ukrainian households

Open Access•Jennifer Majer, Samuel Mbuto et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2024

Infant and young child feeding practices (IYCF) are crucial for children's growth and development but often deteriorate during periods of instability. A cross-sectional survey conducted in three oblasts of Ukraine-Kyiv City and Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa-enroled 724 children 0-23 months of age from 699 households. Using global WHO IYCF Guidelines, 12 indicators of optimal IYCF practices were evaluated. The study found IYCF practices to be relatively s…

  • Infant and young child feeding practices in refugee settings across 203 population‐based surveys from 2013–2019

Open Access•Behzad Kianian, Eva Leidman et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2023

Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) plays a crucial role in early childhood growth and development. This study summarizes recent IYCF practices in multiple refugee settings and compares them to those in the host countries. We analyzed 203 surveys conducted among refugees residing in 15 countries and 120 unique sites and assessed eight IYCF indicators available from those surveys. A total of 146 surveys were conducted in Eastern and Southern Afr…

  • Considerations for assessment of measurement quality of mid‐upper arm circumference data in anthropometric surveys and mass nutritional screenings conducted in humanitarian and refugee settings

Open Access•Oleg Bilukha, Behzad Kianian•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2023

Despite frequent use of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) to assess populations in humanitarian settings, no guidance exists about the ranges for excluding implausible extreme outliers (flags) from MUAC data and about the quality assessment of collected MUAC data. We analysed 701 population-representative anthropometric surveys in children aged 6-59 months from 40 countries conducted between 2011 and 2019. We explored characteristics of flags as…

  • Injury-related deaths before and during the Islamic State insurgency – Baghdad, Iraq, 2010–2015

Open Access•Matthew Goers, Eva Leidman et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2020

During the study period, deaths from both gunfire and explosions in Baghdad peaked in 2014, corresponding with emergence of the Islamic State. Trends suggest a potential impact of insurgency-related activity on other injuries as evidenced by a decrease in the death rate from traffic accidents. The decreased traffic-related death rate could be from decreased vehicle and pedestrian activity during times of violence. Monitoring trends in injury mort…

  • Serious psychological distress and disability among older persons living in conflict affected areas in eastern Ukraine

Open Access•Aimee Summers, Eva Leidman et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2019

Prevalence of serious psychological distress was very high compared with rates reported from developed countries and was highly associated with disability. Health services for the disabled, including psychological as well as physical support, could help in reducing the proportion of people needing mental health services not normally identified

  • Risk factors for unsafe behaviors toward grenades among rural populations affected by explosive devices in Colombia

Open Access•Andrew T Boyd, Kristin Becknell et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2018

Participants reported frequent ED exposure but low receipt of MRE. Our findings should guide MRE improvement in ED-affected areas by strengthening the connection between ED knowledge and avoiding unsafe behavior, with a particular focus on people working outdoors. MRE should promote knowledge of ED risks but should also recognize socioeconomic factors that lead to engaging in unsafe behaviors

  • Suboptimal infant and young child feeding practices among internally displaced persons during conflict in eastern Ukraine

Open Access•Aimee Summers, Oleg Bilukha et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2018

Objective To determine current status, areas for improvement and effect of conflict on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices among internally displaced persons (IDP) in eastern Ukraine. Design Cross-sectional household survey, June 2015. Setting Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia oblasts (Ukrainian administrative divisions) bordering conflict area in Ukraine. Subjects Randomly selected IDP households with children aged Results Exclu…

  • Road traffic fatalities in selected governorates of Iraq from 2010 to 2013

Open Access•Eva Leidman, Maret L Maliniak et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2016

The injury surveillance system provides the first data from a conflict-affected country on road traffic fatalities disaggregated by type of road user. The highest numbers of fatalities were among children and young men. Nearly half of fatalities were pedestrians, a proportion nearly double that of any neighboring country. As insurgency activity increased in 2013, the number of road traffic fatalities declined

  • Nutritional situation among Syrian refugees hosted in Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon

Open Access•Sarder Mahmud Hossain, Eva Leidman et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2016

Despite the ongoing conflict, results from all surveys indicate that global acute malnutrition is relatively low in the assessed Syrian refugee populations. However, prevalence of anemia suggests a serious public health problem among women and children, especially in Za'atri camp. Based on these findings, nutrition partners in the region have reprioritized response interventions, focusing on activities to address micronutrient deficiencies such a…

  • Fatal and non-fatal injuries due to intentional explosions in Nepal, 2008-2011

Open Access•Oleg Bilukha, Kristin Becknell et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2013

Intentional explosion incidents still pose a threat to the civilian population of Nepal. Most incidents are caused by small homemade explosive devices and occur in public places, and males aged 20 to 39 account for a plurality of casualties. Stakeholders addressing the explosive device problem in Nepal should continue to use surveillance data to plan interventions

  • Using Design Effects From Previous Cluster Surveys to Guide Sample Size Calculation in Emergency Settings

    Open Access•Reinhard Kaiser, Bradley A Woodruff et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2006•Citada por: 4•Referências: 13

A good estimate of the design effect is critical for calculating the most efficient sample size for cluster surveys. We reviewed the design effects for seven nutrition and health outcomes from nine population-based cluster surveys conducted in emergency settings. Most of the design effects for outcomes in children, and one-half of the design effects for crude mortality, were below two. A reassessment of mortality data from Kosovo and Badghis, Afg…
