  • Robots, skill demand and manufacturing in US regional labour markets

Open Access•Nancey Green Leigh, Benjamin Kraft et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2019•Citada por: 3•Referências: 5

Advances in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) technology have spurred a re-examination of technology’s impacts on jobs and the economy. This article reviews several key contributions to the current jobs/AI debate, discusses their limitations and offers a modified approach, analysing two quantitative models in tandem. One uses robot stock data from the International Federation of Robotics as the primary indicator of robot use, whereas the …

  • Urban Industrial Land Loss and Foreign Direct Investment-Related Manufacturing Job Sprawl

Jeong-Il Park, Nancey Green Leigh•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Technology•2017

Using longitudinal data from the National Establishment Time-Series dataset, this paper presents research on intra-metropolitan spatial patterns of manufacturing employment created by foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area. A panel regression analysis reveals that the loss of urban industrial land in the central metro area is associated with the suburbanization of FDI manufacturing jobs over time. Based on the k…

  • Foreign direct investment’s role in strengthening metro manufacturing

    Jeong-Il Park, Nancey Green Leigh•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2017•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

Though concern has arisen in recent years over manufacturing job losses in major U.S. metropolitan areas, this study demonstrates that foreign manufacturing firms still tend to locate in such areas. Using longitudinal data from the National Establishment Time-Series data set for the state of Georgia, we examine intrastate spatial patterns of manufacturing foreign direct investment (FDI) employment and associated underlying location factors. We fi…

  • Emerging robotic regions in the United States

Nancey Green Leigh, Benjamin Kraft et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2017•Citada por: 4•Referências: 11

Despite widespread speculation about the potential economic impacts of robotic technology, there has been little academic research on the topic. One barrier to this research is lack of data about the robotics industry or robotics employment. In light of this problem, the authors conducted a robotics ‘census’ designed to describe and map the US robotics industry. Several key robotic regions are identified, although they vary in the nature of the r…

  • First Source Hiring

    Open Access•Thomas H Douthat, Thomas Douthat et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2017•Citada por: 3•Referências: 47

Although cities have revived as economic centers for the middle and upper classes, poor and minority communities continue to be locked out of urban job markets. First Source Hiring is designed to act as both a linkage program and a targeted hiring rule to ensure low-income residents have opportunities to work on publicly sponsored projects. A first wave of FSH began in the 1980s but was abandoned due to political push-back. A second wave emerged …

  • New Insights into Electronic Waste Recycling in Metropolitan Areas

Open Access•Nancey Green Leigh, Taelim Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2012

Electronic waste (e‐waste) recycling is a critical sector for sustainable urban industrial systems. U.S. residents and businesses generate an estimated 3.2 million tons of electronic waste each year; most is not recycled and is generated in urban areas. However, adoption of state environmental regulations for e‐waste recycling is increasing. Between 2003 and mid‐2011, 25 states passed e‐waste laws. There are a growing number of e‐waste collectors…

  • Intrametropolitan Spatial Differentiation and Decline of Inner-Ring Suburbs

Open Access•Sugie Lee, Nancey Green Leigh•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•2007•Citada por: 23•Referências: 5

This article examines the impact of metropolitan growth patterns on intrametropolitan spatial differentiation and inner-ring suburban decline in the four metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Portland, using longitudinal census data from 1970 to 2000. The findings of this study show that inner-ring suburbs were increasingly vulnerable to socioeconomic decline relative to other metropolitan subareas. In contrast, the outer-ri…

  • The City of Cinema

Open Access•Nancey Green Leigh, Judith T Kenny et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•1996•Citada por: 2•Referências: 3

To augment the economic and political analysis of cities which is the traditional content of urban planning curricula, the authors developed a course titled Cinema City. The objective of the course is to expand the students' understanding of both how people respond to life in cities and how this response is in fact influenced by the images they see depicted in film. Striking arguments can be made that our willingness to address urban problems is …

  • Urban Neighborhood Demographics Associated with Environmentally Suspect, Tax-Delinquent Properties

Open Access•Nancey Green Leigh, Robert Gradeck•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•1996

This article focuses on how environmental contamination of urban property, or the perception thereof, acts as a new force in widening inequalities between central cities and the rest of the nation. Environmental contamination, one form of negative neighborhood externality, when linked with a second form, that of tax-delinquent property, become the ultimate neighborhood negative externality, creating a redevelopment impasse under present governmen…

  • What Happened to the American Dream? Changing Earning Opportunities and Prospects of Middle-Class Californians, 1967-1987

immigrants to California, a stream that shows no signs of abating. The exact character of that dream is nowhere precisely defined, though the image of its modern variant was presented with great effect by Hollywood television shows from the 1950s and 1960s as Ozzie and Harriet. Any adequate definition of the middle-class ideal would have to be a continually revised definition that reflects the development of new ways of life, new goods and servic…
