In-situ clustering of mtDNA haplogroup M inferred from complete mitogenomes of two tribal populations of Southern India
origin and spread of haplogroup M lineages in India, shared with many tribal and caste populations.
An Updated Phylogeny of mtDNA Haplogroup R8 Based on Complete Mitogenomes
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences reveal maternal phylogeny to trace back the demographic histories to construct phylogeny of a population. In this study, we update the phylogeny of the autochthonous Indian-specific mtDNA haplogroup R8 to give regional relationships between the members of haplogroup R8 in India and neighbouring areas. A set of 31 complete mitogenomes sequences from a Melakudiya tribal population of Southern India revealed two s…
Maternal genetic link of a south Dravidian tribe with native Iranians indicating bidirectional migration
Background: The phylogeny of major mitochondrial DNA haplogroups has played a key role in assessing the people of India through molecular genetics. Aim: To resolve the phylogeny and phylogeographic pattern of autochthonous haplogroup R with its descendant haplogroup U in the Urali Kuruman tribal population of Southern India. Subjects and methods: Complete mitogenome sequences of 40 individuals were amplified and sequenced using the Sanger sequenc…
Genetic affinity of Muslim population in South India based on HLA-DQB1 and relationship with other Indian Populations
The present study made an attempt to observe genetic affinity of the Muslim population in South India with other neighbor populations. In this regard, DQB1 loci of HLA class II gene as a common genetic marker in phylogenetic assessment has been examined in 45 unrelated healthy individuals using sequence-based typing. The result of this study indicates a close genetic similarity among Indian sub-populations, in spite of segregation with other Musl…
Impact of Migration
Detailed mtDNA genotypes permit a reassessment of the settlement and population structure of the Andaman Islands
The population genetics of the Indian subcontinent is central to understanding early human prehistory due to its strategic location on the proposed corridor of human movement from Africa to Australia during the late Pleistocene. Previous genetic research using mtDNA has emphasized the relative isolation of the late Pleistocene colonizers, and the physically isolated Andaman Island populations of Island South‐East Asia remain the source of claims …
YAP insertion signature in South Asia
A total of 2169 samples from 21 tribal populations from different regions of India were scanned for the Y-chromosome Alu polymorphism. This study reports, for the first time, high frequencies (8-65%) of Y Alu polymorphic (YAP) insertion in northeast Indian tribes. All seven Jarawa samples from the Andaman and Nicobar islands had the YAP insertion, in conformity with an earlier study of Andaman Islanders. One isolated case with haplotype E* was fo…
Consanguinity and its trend in a Mendelian population of Andhra Pradesh, India
Consanguineous marriages have decreased significantly (p < 0.01) among the Kamma of Andhra Pradesh over the past forty years. The decline in uncle-niece marriages has contributed heavily to the decline in consanguinity, which may be due to shifting from agriculture to other occupations like government service and the rapid growth of industrialization. More recently, the tendency toward a lower consanguinity rate has been strengthened by reduction…
