Solar-type periodicities in the climate variability of Northern Fennoscandia during the last three centuries
Fifteen proxy records of summer temperature in Fennoscandia, Northern Europe and in Yamal and Taymir Peninsulas (Western Siberia) were analyzed for the AD 1700–2000 period. Century-long (70–100 year) and quasi bi-decadal periodicities were found from proxy records representing different parts of Fennoscandia. Decadal variation was revealed in a smaller number of records. Statistically significant correlations were revealed between the timescale-d…

New radiocarbon dates of human and bird bones from Zvejnieki Stone Age burial ground in northern Latvia
A total of 317 burials, mostly from the Stone Age, have been detected in the Zvejnieki archaeological complex in northern Latvia. Animal bones are often found in Zvejnieki graves. Some of them are modified into artefacts like pendants and can be associated with the human burials as grave goods. However, the behavioural interpretation of unmodified animal bones is less straightforward. By dating human and animal bones with the radiocarbon method i…
A basin-based approach to the long-term history of forest fires as determined from peat strata
Valid reconstruction of long-term forest fire histories from individual peat cores usually fails, for a number of reasons, even though visible charcoal horizons in peat are indisputable evidence of local or in-situ fires. Both the dating and reliability of fire records from peat can be improved by the means of a ‘basin-based approach’, in which the gradual lateral growth of the peat is studied carefully by means of numerous dated basal peat sampl…
C Dating of Peat and δ 18 O-δd in Ground Ice From Northwest Siberia
We present new radiocarbon dates from a number of Holocene peat deposits along a north-south transect across the Yamal Peninsula. The samples were collected from frozen peat deposits with large ice wedges in: the northern tundra near Seyaha Settlement, in the Central Yamal Peninsula, the southern tundra in Shchuch'ya River valley at the Edem'yaha mouth, the southern part of the Yamal Peninsula, and the southern forest tundra near Labytnangi Town.…

Estimating Long-Term Carbon Accumulation Rates in Boreal Peatlands by Radiocarbon Dating
We used direct radiocarbon dates of peat samples, pollen dates and land-uplift chronology from >1300 cores comprising all or most of the Holocene in the boreal region of Finland, Estonia and Maine (USA) to obtain long-term carbon accumulation rates for boreal peatlands. The “apparent” long-term rate of carbon accumulation (LORCA; g C m −2 a −1 ) ranged from 4.6 to 85.8 (mean 19.9 ± 10.7), depending on the geographical location, wetland type and t…
Use of Bomb-Produced 14 C to Evaluate the Amount of CO 2 Emanating from Two Peat Bogs in Finland
We used moss increment counting to obtain well-defined samples of the topmost peat layers of two Sphagnum fuscum hummocks. The two ombrotrophic bogs, Lakkasuo in central Finland and Korvinsuo in eastern Finland, are of different ages, covering 3 and 9 ka, respectively. Using AMS dating, we traced bomb-produced 14 C through the topmost parts of the two peat profiles. A well-defined 14 C activity peak was found in both sequences dating the correspo…

Radiocarbon Ages of Shells in Holocene Marine Deposits
Radiocarbon dates of marine shells from Central West Greenland, Finnmark, in North Norway, and Dublin Bay, in Ireland, were used in dating relative sea-level changes. When fossil assemblages and formation of marine deposits and their relationship to sea-level were taken into account, the constructed curves of relative sea-level changes agreed with the shell dates. The origin of the shells in the deposits studied varied from site to site, but the …
