Living with Ghosts
Cultural trauma refers to how past experiences of harm can fundamentally transform a community’s shared identity, potentially generating feelings of solidarity and providing communities with a sense of common purpose. This article examines the role of cultural trauma in motivating and guiding ongoing efforts to preserve historic Chinatowns in Canada and the United States in the face of contemporary challenges such as gentrification. We demonstrat…

Scoreboard Urbanism
Georg Simmel famously argued that the sensory onslaught of the urban environment forces people to reduce the world to calculable quantities over colorful qualities and adopt a blasé attitude of muted emotions. Today’s digitally mediated city involves levels of quantification that Simmel could have scarcely imagined. However, rather than exacerbating the blasé attitude, this paper makes the case that digital technologies potentially increase our e…
Revitalization, transformation and the ‘Bilbao effect’
The term ‘Bilbao effect’ describes the potential of iconic architectural developments (IADs) designed by world famous architects to act as a catalyst for economic revitalization and transformation within neighbourhoods or regions. Despite the ubiquity of this term, its validity is still debated. Furthermore, research on the topic has relied almost exclusively on individual or small-N comparative case studies. This paper builds on this research by…
Being homeless at the “End” of homelessness navigating the symbolic and social boundaries of housing first
Housing First (HF) has emerged as the dominant paradigm in homelessness policy and has been praised for bringing an "end" to the homelessness crisis. Others claim, however, that HF facilitates further sociospatial exclusion of people experiencing homelessness (PEH). To advance this debate and understand HF within its larger sociological context, this article examines how HF policies translate to the lived experiences of those who remain in shelte…
Starchitects in Bohemia
Urban scholars have devoted significant attention to the “cultural city,” but less attention has been paid to how different forms of culture relate to each other and to the larger urban environment. In this article, we compare two quintessential forms of culture-led urbanization that represent opposite ends on a spectrum: iconic architecture and neo-bohemia. While iconic architecture is a “top-down” approach to culture involving large budgets, el…

The Global City versus the City of Neighborhoods
Political–economy, which conceptualizes space as a resource over which different groups struggle, has long been the dominant perspective in the study of urban conflict. However space is also a cultural object from which actors derive particular meanings. In order to understand how meaningful interpretations of space give rise to urban conflict, this paper examines the architectural expansions of two Toronto museums. Both projects were fiercely op…

The Role of the Public Institution in Iconic Architectural Development
Research on iconic architecture has typically explained its popularity with reference to global political-economic trends like neo-liberalism and urban entrepreneurialism, but the role of the immediate clients has often been overlooked. Quantitative analysis demonstrates that the majority of these clients are public cultural institutions. In order to explain the affinity between this organisational form and iconic architecture, this paper develop…

Zygmunt Bauman, Consuming Life
W hat do online networking sites like Facebook and MySpace have in common with point-based immigration systems?According to Zygmunt Bauman's latest work, Consuming Life, both of these phenomena demonstrate how individuals are becoming more and more like commodities to be bought, sold, and marketed in ways that increase their demand. Those who are in high demand reap the rewards, and those who are not face bitter isolation. So, be it constructing an…
The Association Between Age and Health Literacy Among Elderly Persons
Functional health literacy was markedly lower among older age groups even after adjusting for differences in MMSE performance, newspaper reading frequency, health status, and visual acuity. Future studies should prospectively examine whether functional literacy declines with age and whether this is explained by declines in cognitive function
