Revisiting Metaphor as an Analytical Tool for Design Research
Metaphor has long been a topic of investigation in scholarly design research. Studies across various design contexts have demonstrated the value of deliberately exploring and using metaphors to facilitate different phases of the design process. However, the analytical potential of metaphors has often been overshadowed by their generative use, leaving their significance in the research phase of the design process relatively unexplored. This articl…
Ethnographies of Unimagined Possibilities
Relying on Krippendorff's description of “authentic conversation” we describe the ethnography of unimagined possibilities in the intersection of ethnography and human-centered design research. Possibilities are what inspire human-centered designers to create products, practices, and services that could satisfy currently unimagined yet real needs and desires. Although possibilities are not observable as such, they can be constructed in conversatio…
The Food Package Makes My Hands Dirty Now’
This article examines how domestic cleaning practices were transformed during the pandemic and how they redefined everyday life. Based on a perspective of actor-network theory, we take the food package as an actant and follow it in domestic space through its interactions with other actants. To get a deeper understanding of these interactions, we conducted an ethnographic study focusing on the food package. Our findings reveal that the new cleanin…
How Come This Man Is Homeless?' An Ethnographic Exploration of Identity Work among Volunteers in a Diner Serving to the Homeless
In this study, we explore the identity work among volunteers in a local restaurant in one of the metropolitan cities of Turkey, which serves to paying customers by daytime, and free food to the homeless in the evening. Our setting, which we call The Diner, is a local attempt to help homeless people whose number increases day by day. Through ethnographic fieldwork, we found that the volunteers at The Diner act as teams based on their selective ass…

This article examines the change in Turkish domestic space through modernization and, in particular, the artifact of lace, as a nonchanging object in Turkish home in its relationship with the 'traditional' and the 'modern' domestic settings. Thereby it investigates how traditional and modern settings are defined in Turkish society and, this leads to a further analysis of the modernization process in Turkey within the scope of Turkish house and it…
