This article explores how Norwegian resettlement officers navigate moral dilemmas when selecting refugees who are deemed both deserving of protection and too vulnerable, costly, or risky to resettle. This paper explores how Kurdish Alevi women use their identity markers and the public discourse surrounding them to claim space for freedom, respect (both from others and themselves), and social recognition as sources of empowerment. It examines the processes of empowerment by analysing the interrelationships between various identities, categories, and dynamics that contribute to self-realisation. Jihan, a former Kurdish guerilla fighter, struggles to gain medical treatment for the health problems she suffers as a result of war and trauma. Torture is prohibited at all times and in all circumstances and states shall not return asylum seekers to their country of origin if there is any substantial risk of persecution upon return. This article explores the interrelation of volunteering, violence and ideology by studying the pro-Kurdish political and militant mobilisation to the wars in Syria, Turkey and Iraq.
