  • Information management strategies within conversations about cigarette smoking

    Aaron Metzger, Lauren S Wakschlag et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2013•Citada por: 4•Referências: 5

The present study examined smoking-specific and general parenting predictors of in vivo observed patterns of parent-adolescent discussion concerning adolescents' cigarette smoking experiences and associations between these observed patterns and 24-month longitudinal trajectories of teen cigarette smoking behavior (nonsmokers, current experimenters, escalators). Parental solicitation, adolescent disclosure, and adolescent information management we…

  • Sex Differences in Adolescent Depression

    Open Access•Benjamin L Hankin, Robin Mermelstein et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2007

Stress exposure and reactivity models were examined as explanations for why girls exhibit greater levels of depressive symptoms than boys. In a multiwave, longitudinal design, adolescents' depressive symptoms, alcohol usage, and occurrence of stressors were assessed at baseline, 6, and 12 months later (N=538; 54.5% female; ages 13–18, average 14.9). Daily stressors were coded into developmentally salient domains using a modified contextual-threat…

  • A National Survey of Tobacco Cessation Programs for Youths

Susan J Curry, Steven Emery et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Citada por: 2•Referências: 20

Objectives. We collected data on a national sample of existing community-based tobacco cessation programs for youths to understand their prevalence and overall characteristics. Methods. We employed a 2-stage sampling design with US counties as the first-stage probability sampling units. We then used snowball sampling in selected counties to identify administrators of tobacco cessation programs for youths. We collected data on cessation programs w…

  • Changes in Self-Efficacy and Readiness for Smoking Cessation among Women with High School or Less Education

    R B Warnecke, Osvaldo F Morera et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2001•Citada por: 4

The most common theory of smoking cessation postulates that readiness to quit begins with changes in attitudes that move the smoker toward behavioral change and eventual cessation. However, trends in smoking indicate that many who currently smoke are not ready to quit. Hence, strategies that both enhance readiness and focus on quitting are likely to be most effective. We hypothesize that an intervention addressed to motivating behavior change wil…

  • The Head Start parent involvement program as a vehicle for smoking reduction intervention

Regnal Jones, Clara Manfredi et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•1994

An eight-session smoking cessation program for mothers of children in the Head Start program was implemented in Chicago and evaluated in an experimental design (37 intervention and 28 control schools). The program was designed for schools with primarily black enrollment. A baseline parent population survey indicated smoking rates of 43%, confirming a need for the program. More than one third of smokers in the intervention schools attended at leas…

  • Social support and smoking cessation and maintenance.

Robin Mermelstein, Sheldon Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consulting and…•1986

Examined the role of social support in smoking cessation and maintenance in 2 longitudinal, prospective studies with 64 Ss each (mean ages 38.4 yrs and 38.8 yrs). Three kinds of support factors were assessed: support from a partner directly related to quitting, perceptions of the availability of general (i.e., nonsmoking) support resources, and the presence of smokers in Ss' social networks. Ss were smokers in cessation programs. Corroborated smo…

  • A Global Measure of Perceived Stress

Sheldon Cohen, Thomas W Kamarck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1983•Citada por: 1724•Referências: 3

This paper presents evidence from three samples, two of college students and one of participants in a community smoking-cessation program, for the reliability and validity of a 14-item instrument, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), designed to measure the degree to which situations in one's life are appraised as stressful. The PSS showed adequate reliability and, as predicted, was correlated with life-event scores, depressive and physical symptoma…
