Pathways Connecting Housing Assistance to Child Well-Being in Families Experiencing Homelessness
Using internet-assisted geocoding of 1940 census addresses to reconstruct enumeration districts for use with redlining and longitudinal health datasets
Many historical administrative documents, such as the 1940 census, have been digitized and thus could be merged with geographic data. Merged data could reveal social determinants of health, health and social policy milieu, life course events, and selection effects otherwise masked in longitudinal datasets. However, most exact boundaries of 1940 census enumeration districts have not yet been georeferenced. These exact boundaries could aid in analy…
Assessing PM 2.5 pollution in the Northeastern United States from the 2023 Canadian wildfire smoke
Between June 6 and 8, 2023, wildfires in Quebec, Canada generated massive smoke plumes that traveled long distances and deteriorated air quality across the Northeastern United States (US). Surface daily PM 2.5 observations exceeded 100 μ g m -3 , affecting major cities such as New York City and Philadelphia, while many areas lacked PM 2.5 monitors, making it difficult to assess local air quality conditions. To address this gap, we developed a WRF…
Perinatal Resources and Wildfire Smoke
BACKGROUND: Pregnant people and infants are vulnerable to wildfire smoke. However, the availability of perinatal resources in communities impacted by smoke is unknown. OBJECTIVE: Describe perinatal resources in counties prone to wildfire smoke. RESEARCH STUDY DESIGN: Smoke data came from the Hazard Mapping System and perinatal resources were gathered from various sources. Choropleth maps described the geographic distribution of smoke. Unadjusted …

Association of the Delaware Contraceptive Access Now Initiative with Postpartum Larc Use
The DelCAN initiative was associated with increased LARC use among postpartum women in Delaware. During the first 3 years of the initiative, LARC use increased progressively and to a greater extent among Medicaid-enrolled women. Comprehensive initiatives that combine Medicaid payment reforms, provider training, free contraceptive services, and public awareness efforts may reduce unmet demand for highly effective contraceptives in the postpartum m…
Delaware Contraceptive Access Now and Contraceptive Initiation Among Medicaid Enrollees, 2015‒2020
Delaware Contraceptive Access Now was a statewide contraceptive access program implemented in Delaware between 2015 and 2020. We evaluated the association of the program with contraceptive initiation in Delaware’s Medicaid program using a difference-in-differences design that compared changes in Delaware to changes in Maryland. Results suggest that program implementation was associated with increased initiation of long-acting reversible methods, …
The Benefits of Rental Assistance for Children's Health and School Attendance in the United States
Programs that provide affordable and stable housing may contribute to better child health and thus to fewer missed days of school. Drawing on a unique linkage of survey and administrative data, we use a quasi-experimental approach to examine the impact of rental assistance programs on missed days of school due to illness. We compare missed school days due to illness among children receiving rental assistance with those who will enter assistance w…
Maryland’s Global Budget Revenue Program
BACKGROUND: In 2014, Maryland implemented the Global Budget Revenue (GBR) program to reduce unnecessary hospital utilization and contain spending. Little is known about its impact on pediatric health outcomes and high-cost services that are primarily financed by payers other than Medicare. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to examine the impact of the GBR program on neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission and infant mortality. RESEARCH DESIGN: We cond…
Changes to Contraceptive Method Use at Title X Clinics Following Delaware Contraceptive Access Now, 2008–2017
Objectives. To measure changes in the contraceptive methods used by Title X clients after implementation of Delaware Contraceptive Access Now, a public–private initiative that aims to increase access to contraceptives, particularly long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs). Methods. Using administrative data from the 2008–2017 Family Planning Annual Reports and a difference-in-differences design, we compared changes in contraceptive method us…
Life and Death in the American City
The past several decades have witnessed growing geographic disparities in life expectancy within the United States, yet the mortality experience of U.S. cities has received little attention. We examine changes in men’s life expectancy at birth for the 25 largest U.S. cities from 1990 to 2015, using mortality data with city of residence identifiers. We reveal remarkable increases in life expectancy for several U.S. cities. Men’s life expectancy in…
Medicaid Expansion at Title X Clinics
BACKGROUND: Title X supports access to family planning and preventive care services. Given its focus on low-income clients, Title X clinics may have been particularly affected by the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion. OBJECTIVES: To examine the impact of the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion on Title X client volumes, health insurance coverage, and contraceptive method mix. RESEARCH DESIGN: A difference-in-differences design compare…
Using Data From the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project for State Health Policy Research
BACKGROUND: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), the nation's most complete source of all-payer hospital care data, supports analyses at the national, regional, state and community levels. However, national HCUP data are often used in inappropriate ways in studies of state-specific issues. OBJECTIVE: To describe the opportunities and challenges of using HCUP data to conduct state health policy research and to provide empirical exam…
The Impact of Housing Assistance on the Mental Health of Children in the United States
Housing assistance policies may lead to improved mental health for children and adolescents by improving housing quality, stability, and affordability. We use a unique data linkage of the National Health Interview Survey and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development administrative data to examine the impact of housing assistance on parent-reported mental health outcomes for children ages 2 to 17 (N = 1,967). We account for selection into h…
Residential High-Speed Internet Among Those Likely to Benefit From an Online Health Insurance Marketplace
Using data from the 2013 American Community Survey, we found that 24.3 million people (about 1 in 4) who were either eligible for Medicaid/Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or appeared likely to shop for Qualified Health Plan (QHP) lacked residential high-speed Internet. Specifically, 28.6% or 18.9 million people eligible for Medicaid/CHIP and 17.1% or 5.5 million people who appeared likely to shop for a QHP did not have high-speed Inter…
Monitoring Health Reform Efforts
This study compares estimates of health insurance coverage from the American Community Survey (ACS) to those in twelve state-specific surveys. Uninsurance estimates for the nonelderly are consistently higher in the ACS than in state surveys, as are direct purchase insurance estimates. Estimates for employer-sponsored insurance are similar, but public coverage rates are lower in the ACS. The ACS meets some but not all of the states' data needs; it…
Ethnic group differences in the relationship between depressive symptoms and smoking
The relationship between depressive symptoms and smoking differs by ethnicity, particularly for Latinos. Understanding these differences may contribute to the development of culturally specific interventions
Bias in Telephone Surveys That do not Sample Cell Phones
OBJECTIVE: To examine how biased health surveys are when they omit cell phone-only households (CPOH) and to explore whether poststratification can reduce this bias. METHODS: We used data from the 2008 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), which uses area probability sampling and in-person interviews; as a result people of all phone statuses are included. First, we examined whether people living in CPOH are different from those not living in CP…
