Evaluating longitudinal relationships between parental monitoring and substance use in a multi-year, intensive longitudinal study of 670 adolescent twins
Overall, we found developmental changes in each phenotype, baseline correlations between substance use and parental monitoring, co-occurring changes and mutual genetic influences for time at home and cannabis use, and substantial genetic influences on many substance use and parental monitoring phenotypes. However, our geospatial variables were mostly unrelated to parental monitoring, suggesting they poorly measured this construct. Furthermore, th…

The role of neighborhood stressors on cognitive function
Examining the influence of perceived stress on developmental change in memory and perceptual speed for adopted and nonadopted individuals
The present study prospectively evaluated cumulative early life perceived stress in relation to differential change in memory and perceptual speed from middle childhood to early adulthood. We aimed to identify periods of cognitive development susceptible to the effects of perceived stress among both adopted and nonadopted individuals. The sample consisted of participants in the Colorado Adoption Project (CAP, N = 690). Structured latent growth cu…
Genetic and Environmental Contributions to General Cognitive Ability Through the First 16 Years of Life
The genetic and environmental contributions to the development of general cognitive ability throughout the first 16 years of life were examined using sibling data from the Colorado Adoption Project. Correlations were analyzed along with structural equation models to characterize the genetic and environmental influences on longitudinal stability and instability. Intraclass correlations reflected both considerable genetic influence at each age and …

Adoption results for self-reported personality
Twin studies consistently indicate moderate genetic influence on individual differences in personality as assessed using self-report questionnaires, with heritability estimates typically about 40%. In this first analysis of self-report personality data from the longitudinal Colorado Adoption Project, little evidence is found for additive genetic influence in parent-offspring and sibling adoption analyses based on a foundation sample of 245 adopti…
The heritability of inhibited and uninhibited behavior
Young children who respond to the unfamiliar with wariness and avoidance belong to a temperamental category called behaviorally inhibited; sociable children who approach the unfamiliar are called uninhibited. This study assessed the heritable nature of these 2 categories. The longitudinal sample consisted of 178 same-sex twin pairs seen at 14 months and 162 pairs seen at 20 and 24 months. An aggregate inhibition index was constructed at each of t…
The Development and Validation of a Test Battery Measuring Specific Cognitive Abilities in Four-Year-Old Children
A battery of nine specific cognitive abilities tests to assess verbal, spatial, perceptual speed, and memory abilities in children at age 4 was constructed and administered to a sample of 267 children participating in the Colorado Adoption Project. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed four correlated factors that adequately describe the covariation among the tests. Specific cognitive ability composites showed test-retest correlat…
The Development and Validation of a Test Battery to Measure Differentiated Cognitive Abilities in Three-Year-Old Children
A 35-40 minute battery of eight tests was constructed to measure the following four specific cognitive abilities in young, preschool children: verbal skill, memory, perceptual speed, and spatial ability. The battery was administered to 98 preschool children. A factor analysis of the intercorrelations of the eight tests revealed four interpretable factors each representing one of the targeted abilities. Prior to this study, evidence for this parti…
