Background: The National Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) Project developed and tested a model for facilitating the implementation of five psychosocial EBPs for adults with severe mental illness in the United States. Assertive community treatment for patients with co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorder
Integrated mental health and substance abuse treatment within an assertive community treatment (ACT) approach was compared to that within a standard case management approach for 223 patients with dual disorders over three years. ACT patients showed greater improvements on some measures of substance abuse and quality of life, but the groups were equivalent on most measures, including stable community days, hospital days, psychiatric symptoms, and …
Methodological issues in assertive community treatment studies
Recent evaluations of ACT programs have produced equivocal findings, often leading to the invocation of methodological problems as responsible for the lack of positive results. This paper discusses issues of theory and methodology as they pertain to improving research of ACT, with particular attention paid to issues of sampling, process evaluation, measurement, and data analysis

Through a controlled experiment in which 100 viewers were shown a presidential debate and its coverage by network news reporters, the authors explore viewer perceptions of the candidates, emotional reactions to them, and their recall of issues. Television Coverage of Candidates' Display Behavior during the 1984 Democratic Primaries in the United States
Analysis of network news during the 1984 presidential campaign shows that TV coverage of Democratic candidates differed in frequency and in the kinds of expressive displays shown over the course of the pre-convention period. Although political success was generally correlated with media attention, as predicted on the basis of ethology, Jackson was more successful than Mondale in becoming the unquestioned focus of news coverage. Emotional reactions to a political leader's expressive displays
Forty college students viewed videotaped excerpts of happiness/reassurance, anger/ threat, and fear/evasion expressive displays by President Reagan. Within each display condition one excerpt was presented in image-only and one in sound-plus-image format. Emotional reactions were assessed by facial electromyography (EMG) from the brow and cheek regions and by skin resistance and heart rate. Following each excerpt, subjects also reported verbally t…

The test group participated in a 13-session educational intervention with training in clinical medicine, life-style, and use of health services.
