The grouping of affect terms according to the situations that elicit them
Survival Quotient as a Method for Investigating Psychosocial Aspects of Cancer Survival
Terminally ill cancer patients die at different rates and some of this variance is due to psychosocial differences. In order to discover this variance we developed the Survival Quotient, an index of relative longevity which is applicable across different tumor sites with widely differing life expectancies. The Quotient is based on the difference between Observed Survival, i.e., how long a patient lived from diagnosis to death, and Expected Surviv…
Level of Aspiration as a Function of Learning-Potential Status in the Educable Mentally Retarded
2 groups of educable mental retardates (gainers and nongainers) were identified on the basis of their differential ability to profit from instruction on the Kohs Blocks. Their levels of aspiration were obtained for performances on verbal and nonverbal tasks following experimentally manipulated success and failure. Performance-discrepant levels of aspiration were more typical of nongainers than gainers, especially after failure. Compared with the …
An Empirical Test of the Configural Scoring Hypothesis
MMPI correlates of Negro acculturation in a northern city
Conscious and Preconscious Influences on Recall
In an attempt to replicate the Spence (1964) finding that primary recall hinders the recall of primary associates, an experiment controlling for serial position and associative clustering effects was performed. Results were obtained which indicate facilitation rather than restriction of associate recall after primary recall. Spence-type results were obtained, however, with Ss whose scores were above the sample mean on the Extraversion scale of th…
