Measuring product differentiation by observing consumer search
In this article, we calculate various distance metrics to measure product differentiation by observing consumer search behavior directly. We compare these measures by analyzing a dataset of 1,642 digital cameras with 85 product characteristics and show that differences in the product characteristics are correlated with some of the measures of distance to a surprisingly high degree. Furthermore, we demonstrate that products categorized as having m…
The causal effect of agritourism on farm survival
We use three waves of census data containing detailed characteristics of the entire population of Austrian farms to examine the causal effect of agritourism on farm survival. To control for self-selection into agritourism, we exploit regional variation in tourism intensity that is exogenous to individual farms. On average, agritourism causally increases survival probabilities by 10.9 percentage points per decade, which is economically and statist…
Local income inequality and product variety
This article investigates the relationship between local income inequality and firms’ location and product choices. Using detailed information on income at a regionally disaggregated level and individual data on Austrian restaurants, we show that product variety crucially depends on the distribution (in addition to the level) of income. Local markets with higher income inequality are characterized by a larger number of firms, offering a wider ran…
Unequal access to childcare in cities
This article examines inequalities in the spatial accessibility of childcare between high- and low-status neighbourhoods in the city of Vienna and asks (i) whether specific public and non-profit provider types contribute to these inequalities and (ii) which factors may cause these inequalities in a mainly tax-funded childcare system. For our analysis, we combine data on the location and characteristics of childcare providers with spatially granul…
Getting the first job
We analyze the relationship between residence in an ethnic enclave and immigrants' labor market integration with respect to finding a first job in the receiving country. The analysis distinguishes between the size and the quality of the ethnic enclaves, where quality is measured in terms of employment rate among ethnic peers in the same neighborhood. We use longitudinal geo‐coded registry data for two distinct groups of immigrants arriving in the…
Inequalities in Spatial Accessibility of Childcare
Equal access to childcare services is a key concern of childcare policy. This article analyses social inequalities in the availability of such services. We explore how observed disparities are related to the socio-economic status of neighbourhoods and investigate how different provider types contribute to such differences. To do so, we use data on all childcare centres in the city of Vienna, Austria, on the spatial distribution of children aged u…
Network migration
This paper analyses the role of the spatial structure of migrant networks in the location decision of migrants to the European Union at the regional level. Using a random parameters logit specification, a significant positive effect of migrant networks in neighbouring regions on migrants’ location decisions is found. Although this spatial spillover effect is smaller than the effect of networks in the host regions, omitting to control for this spa…
Export, Migration and Costs of Trade
Pennerstorfer D. Export, migration and costs of trade: evidence from Central European firms, Regional Studies. This article analyses the link between immigration and trade at the firm level, utilizing information on the export activities of 8300 firms located in different Central European countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) for various export markets as well as regional data on immigration. The empirical analysis suggests a …
