Florence Pasche Guignard, Pascale F Engelmajer et al.•CHAPTER•Beyond Mother Goddesses•2026

    Open Access•arkar•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2021•Referências: 6

The asymmetrical commercial surrogacy industry in India has been subject to media scrutiny and scholarly debate focusing on biomedical, legal, ethical and feminist concerns. Since 2016, this discourse has taken a contested turn, as the new Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill bans commercial surrogacy and allows only altruistic surrogacy for heteronormative, married, clinically-infertile Indian couples/women. This Bill has been passed by Parliament's lowe…

This article looks at the regulations of pregnancy, birthing, breastfeeding in Ayurvedic treatises, and at representations of mothering in Vedic and Puranic texts related to childrearing. Ayurvedic garbha sanskar (educating the mind of the foetus) regulates the pregnancy of women to ensure the safe birthing of superior babies. Breastfeeding is both glorified and strictly regulated in Ayurvedic texts. Several Vedic texts describe a range of ritual…
